[Nineties Flava]

Fruitvale is Oakland's Barrio... it has by far the largest percentage of latinos in any Oakland neighborhood. It's a predominantly working to lower-middle class neighborhood... while there is crime and urban decay, it's a fairly stable neighborhood and easily one of the most stable in east oakland. It, like the rest of east oakland, has a lot of history..

Brookdale Ave

Why does this get its own section, you ask? Here's why: if you go all the way to the end of Brookdale on the left side, you'll notice that it's a dead end, or that's what you thought until you noticed that there appeared to be a big nice house on the other side of the fence. WTF?! A big nice house in Fruitvale?!! That's right... there's apparently some little microscopic rich enclave on the other side of the Brookdale dead end that leads to 3 historic, restored houses and a creek that looks like it was pulled out of a park (which it is; it eventually leads to WD Wood Park). Unfortunately, the gate wasn't open but I snapped a single photo of the 1st house on the other side... East Oakland has no shortage of oddities.

Hickory, Cordova & Castello St. (west of Fruitvale)


This also gets its own section for a reason. The reason being... these streets look completely out of place. These are easily some of the best-maintained streets in Fruitvale... these streets could easily pass for being in a suburb. This gives you a hint of how east oakland in general used to be... in fact, the vast majority of east and deep east oakland used to be completely separate towns (ie Havenscourt, Webster, etc.) that were white working class to middle class. It's interesting how Oakland as we know it today did not exist a mere 70 years ago...
