Preferably somewhere in a safe neighborhood within short distance (<10miles) to shopping....

Either studio or 1 bedroom's fine. Budget's about $1300/month for rent. I know it's impossible in Palo Alto or Mountain View, but is it even possible anywhere in South Bay? What about Foster City?

Why not live in Redwood City? Not a ton of options for $1300, but there are some:

Here's the south bay max $1300:

Here's the peninsula results:

It's not impossible. Good luck!

When you factor in the bridge toll, I don't think it's going to cost much less (and may be even more) to live in the East Bay, compared with being in Redwood City.

Actually, the bridge toll is $5/day x 5 days a week = $25 x 4 weeks = only $100/month.

I think BobbyGuzman is on to something here...

OP, look at Newark, Fremont, Union City options. I put in $1300 max again. Remember to add $100/month for bridge toll.
