Should I look north, or south of the Tamiami Trail for a home. Is their a better/safer area and where is the flood zone area in Port Charlotte? Is there a newer area w/ newer homes? Thanks.

Many of the areas west of the trail have direct access to the gulf/harbor. And most of the areas west of the trail also require flood insurance.

As far as safer, are you talking crime or from the storms or both?

I had a whole long response to this but thought I was hitting delete and hit back and lost the whole thing. Grrr...

I was looking more at the crime level. Thanks.

Most of the crime in Sarasota County is within the limits of the City of Sarasota. But the crime in Sarasota is nothing compared to the crime in Miami, Tampa or St Pete.

What we discovered immediately is homes west/south of the tamiami have gulf access, those on the north/east side do not. Tho there is some river access. We wanted gulf/harbor access so we learned right away to limit our search to south of the tamiami. We looked, and bought a lot, in Port Charlotte.
