Two days ago Seattle Subway posted their updated Vision Map on their Facebook Page. The response has been overwhelming. Almost 300 image likes, 130 shares and over a hundred new page likes, and still growing.

I guess the map just speaks to deep seated desire of the people of Seattle to get around their city quickly and easily.

What do you think of it?

Have you checked out Seattle Subway's Facebook Page before? What do you think of their plan to speed up Sound Transit's efforts to build true Rapid Transit throughout the city?

Interesting picture, but who exactly is "Seattle Subway?" Just some guy who put up a Facebook page, or is there something more substantial going on?

Michael, it's not just one guy with a Facebook Page, but a group of people working together to make this vision a reality.

If you missed it, check out the writeup that was front page of the Stranger a few weeks back:

The way the city government moves, most of us will be long gone before something like this is running.

Michael, no problem! Just trying to spread the good news.

Hemlock, this is about speeding up the process. No, we aren't some kind of totalitarian, unitary government, it's gonna take a while. But the sooner we start working on this the sooner we can get results.

Do you know how much that will cost? Seriously. Some of these areas are so built-up, that they could only do light-rail at grade, which is crappy, but better than nothing.

Two subway lives coming up NW Seattle? Two lines on the SE side of the city? Service to Bothell/Kenmore? I mean, it's a nice idea, but the proliferation of the lines approximates what is found in Manhattan...almost!

If there's anything redeeming, it might be fewer Subarus clogging the roads!

Well, you know Seattleites will complain about being overextended on tax, so a lot probably won't come to pass... but its worth discussing. I wouldn't be surprised if there's also an emphasis on actual subway (as in underground), rather than being out there-- it would be easier to built, in the sense that it won't completely interfere with traffic.

OP, is this map different from the one in your original Seattle Subway post (Seattle Subway - Pretty Cool! )? I've actually included an article in that thread where they talk about finishing up on the boring of the UW line... and showed a picture of "Brenda". Definitely pretty cool.

The cost for the entire system? No clue. Couldn't even be built all at once if we wanted to.

And in fact we don't even know the cost of building one line, likely based on the Transit Master Plan work the city just did, something similar to this:

However, that is just a rough guess.

Truth is, no one on the Seattle Subway Campaign are engineers nor do we have all the money necessary to just CONDUCT a cost analysis.

What Seattle Subway is trying to do is leverage the cities taxing authority to move Sound Transit's planned engineering and analysis work forward in time. THEN we will have an idea of what such a line will cost. No creating a new agency, no civilians pretending to be civil engineers, just a bunch of people that want our tried and true subway builders (Sound Transit) to build them faster.
