I will tell you, I am 21 years old and I graduate from college in May and I would love to live AROUND Seattle. Why? Because I hate summers and the heat and I think the mountains/evergreens are unbeatable natural beauty. As far as Seattle itself goes....eh....overcrowded, lots of homeless, TERRIBLE traffic. I don't think there is really anything superior about the city itself, but the surrounding wonders are what make it worth living near/in.

So why do people think Seattle is trendy? Yeah, there are an abnormal amount of kids walking around with weird colored hair and tats, but I dont understand. Is it because of the Grunge rock leftover reputation?

Or is it because the city leaders are trying to be leaders against global warming/obesity/etc?

Its considered "trendy" because a lot of people want to move here and/or regard it well. There's a huge assortments of reasons as to why people would want to move here. Granted, Seattle does have its cons (like every other cities)... but many choose to not put too much weight on that and focus on the positives.

These usually are the common reasons as to why people want to move here:
  • Its liberal-leaning
  • Its beautiful (the city, the environment, scenery/green et. c)
  • On the West Coast, but not California
  • Good Economy, Job opportunities
  • U-Dub is a good school
  • Believe it or not, the weather is appealing
  • Its got a different vibe than most are used to, and just happen to like
  • All the water
  • Has a certain kind of racial/social cohesion that isn't found in most other cities
  • Has a "quirky" culture

I know many (including my mother) who move to Seattle because of there are other Asians around. People (non-Seattleites) are so anti-grunge today, I hardly think it's even a factor.

There is nothing "superior" about any city. It's all relative. Either you like it or you don't

My opinion is that Seattle is viewed more like a European city than many other US cities. Add in the tech aspect and it stands out a little bit more. Especially when compared to the region. Even if it isn't a trendy city on the world stage....just compare it to nearly any other place in WA and Seattle is quite different.

60% of residents are from ither states snd many of those are from other countries, making it a real diverse (culturally) area. Combine that with the high paying jobs and natural beauty and it becomes very attractive, despite the mayor's attempts to ruin it.

I feel like Seattle hasn't been trendy since the 90's. Portland had its share of the limelight in the 00's and now Austin really seems to be the city du jour (or New Orleans for those who are really edgy).

I think most people move here for the economy and the natural beauty, in that order. That's why I moved here.

Those are all the reasons I plan on living there to become a police officer at, but I might also go to U-Dub and go for a degree in computer science, or go to a different university for computer science then apply for a job in Seattle in game development.

Moving to Seattle was trendy 20 years ago. Trends are generally short-lived; people who move here generally do so because they feel it's a good fit climate/political/work-wise. And because it's a beautiful place.

It's pretty dang cultural. I've heard more foreign languages in one day downtown than I have anywhere else. So many weird/interesting people here. And it is super tech savvy, so there are lots of smart....er people.
