Hello,
My wife and I are moving to Seattle from California in a few months and need to search for an area to live. We want to live in Seattle, but don't know what area/neighborhood.

Our budget will be $1,300/month for rent on a house, condo, or apartment. We want to be in an area that isn't TOO busy with cars/people (like downtown). I would like to be near the puget sound since I LOVE to fish. We like going to restaurants and bars, but not be around a big bar scene area.

Do any areas come to mind? I know it's kind of vague, but we just want somewhere safe, quiet, and a sense of a community feel.

Thank you in advance.

West Seattle/Admiral/Alki? ...or Ballard/Sunset Hill/Shilshole?

Roosevelt District and points north: Maple Leaf (great neighborhood!), Pinehurst, also Ravenna. West Seattle's also good. Magnolia is right on the Sound. Also consider Laurelhurst, which is bordered on 2 sides by Lake Washington, also good for fishing. Look up Craigslist rentals, for the various neighborhoods to compare prices.

ALL of Seattle is near Puget Sound, you can hardly miss.

It depends on whether you prefer saltwater fishing or freshwater.

As a former Californian fisherman myself, I found the salt water regulations here way more difficult to sort out, with seasons that change every year or even during the same year, and different regulations for various parts of the sound. I have been out fishing the sound a few times by boat but mostly stick to fresh water. With lake Union, Lake Washington, and on the eastside Lake Sammamish, there is plenty of good fishing, but not much public access without a boat. The rivers have difficult regulations, too, but are much more accessible on the eastside. I would not eat anything from Elliot Bay or the Duwamish River.

Your rent budget will be pretty limiting in Seattle, you will find a lot more nice places at about $1500-1600.

Man, I just get picked apart on this board. Ok, there's no "neighborhood" called Shilshole. It's designated as a bay. I just wanted to tie Puget Sound in with the Sunset Hill and Ballard neighborhoods and thought the Shilshole Bay Marina would tie it in. My mistake. I apologize. Happy now?

Oh, I wasn't trying to be a **** with my comment... it wasn't sarcasm. I was just curious if there was a neighborhood that I hadn't heard of, and if so, where it was. I wasn't trying to be a *****.

Don't forget north beach. We're very convenient to Shilshole marina. In fact you can walk from north beach to Shilshole along the water at low tide.

Oh, okay, sorry about that. It's just lately I've made a lot of enemies on this board so I tend to be a bit defensive. I wasn't sure if you were trying to "put me in my place" like some others have or what. Sorry.

Shilshole is generally considered the area on Seaview Avenue from the mouth of Salmon Bay up to Golden Gardens. Ray's Boathouse, Anthony's, Shilshole Bay Marina, etc. along Puget Sound below Sunset Hill. Wikipedia defines it as "part of Puget Sound east of a line drawn northeasterly from Seattle's West Point in the southwest to its Golden Gardens Park in the northeast."
