Hi,
I'm currently an Oregon resident, and I just bought a new car in Oregon. I also just got a new job in Seattle that starts August 1. We'll be moving in late July. The Washington DOL says I owe use tax if I purchased the car within 90 days of moving to Washington. As it stands, I'll be in Washington about 60 days after purchasing the new car. Is there any way to avoid getting hit with this use tax? Does the department of licensing know when I moved? What if I wait 30 days to register the vehicle? Thanks.

They only know when you moved when you get your WA DL. You have 30 days to get the license after moving. If you stretch it out to the end you may be able to make 90 days. Whether they'll add another layer of scrutiny due to the recent move and recent purchase I don't know, but my guess is if you have a not recently issued OR DL, it won't matter.

WA didn't give me any trouble registering my out of state vehicles, unlike Virginia where they were initially unwilling to accept a 14 month old bill of sale as proof I paid sales tax living out of state. In WA I just walked in with my newly issued WA DL and paid the registration fees.

get your WA DL 90+ days after you bought the car.

or just wait until next year to get your WA DL and register your car. by then it will be more than enough time...

I used to hear urban legends about neighbors in Seattle turning other neighbors in for having Oregon plates...wonder if it's true? I would wait until the 90 day mark and then register in WA to be on the safe side...
