I have a dilemma and would really appreciate advice...

I have a middle schooler and a 4th grader. We have lived in Mercer Island for the past 5 years during which time we have been actively involved, have made good friends and are for the most part pretty settled here. During the time we've lived here, we have driven through Lakemont and just absolutely love the look and feel of its neighborhoods. This move is not made out of necessity, but as our current lease will be up this winter, and we are finally wanting to buy, we've been grappling with the question of whether we should stay where we are or finally buy in our desired area which is Lakemont.

This move would mean we would be switching schools for our daughters. For our extroverted 4th grader, the move is really not a big deal. She's young enough that I feel she would make new friendships fairly easily. On the other hand, for our older one, we would be switching schools in the middle of her middle school career. I know this is a sensitive age, and to make matters more challenging, she's super quiet, reserved, and has had a history of finding it more difficult to make friends.

If there are any parents out there with middle schoolers in Issaquah (or anywhere else), can I get your thoughts on relocating with a 7th grader?

Hi Sunnie, I certainly understand the allure of MI but Lakemont is a fine place to live. We have a soon to be 7th grader girl. I think they are more adaptable than we sometimes give them credit for. Just love her, as I'm sure you do, she'll be okay. I think the ability to get your own home will be a decision that will serve your family well.

I have an introverted boy and I face similar social issues. We have moved and I spend a lot of time in the summer driving to our old neighborhood to pick up and drop off friends- luckily the parents are accommodating and help with driving. We have many sleepovers.

One thing that has helped make new friends is immediately sign kids up for a class or team nearby that they are interested in and try to connect with parents whose kids are also involved in those activities and go to your daughters school. It could be school activities or others outside.. , drama ( village theater) , soccer team, local dance class.

There is something to be said for learning to make friends in a new environment. It's a good skill to practice while she has supportive parents to help her out. She may not live in the same place her whole life and having the confidence of knowing she can adapt to a new city, may help her out in the long run.

I'd do what feels right for your entire family.
