The article actually got that one wrong. There are nonstops to MSN from SEA. Maybe they meant MKE? There are a couple of those.

Unfortunately Alaska Air has consolidated its service from Portland so numerous non-stop routes have been terminated and now require a flight to Seattle first. Not great for me and family.

It's missing from the Seattle Met list, although there are daily nonstops.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I was surprised when I saw it.

I'm not clear on why the article was published. The same info is on the SeaTac web site and in the Wikipedia article for SeaTac.

Seattle has developed into a major hub, not only for Alaska, but Delta. Delta offers several nonstops to Salt Lake, not sure where that comment was coming from. The tech industry is mostly responsible for many nonstops to many destinations. Further, the airport is congested both airside and inside. A new airport is unlikely as there is no place to put it. Everett offers some relief but is limited. This is becoming an increasing problem for western Washington air service.

I do think this has been the case for a while and a big part of the reason why I don’t think it’s more of a hub, though this year I think think it’s been particularly acute. Another part of the reason is its far-flung location. Seattle has always been a fairly expensive place to fly to from most parts of the country, at least in the past 10 years or so. If you’re flying Alaska and to a lesser extent Delta you can find a lot of nonstops.

I don’t think it will ever be able to compete with places like Dallas, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, etc. But I do think it will grow in terms of international routes.

Of course Seattle can’t be a national hub, with the exception of Alaska arrivals. But, yes, internationally it does serve as a minor hub routing Alaska, Eastern Washington, even Portland internationaly. Portland pales in nonstop international flights compared with Seattle.
