Let's not ignore what could likely be a false premise at the root of the question the original poster asks: that depression leads to creativity.

I think it's more likely the other way around: that, historically, many well known (but certainly not all) creative people happen to have suffered depression.

One characteristic probably does not directly lead to the other.

Ironic. It is the places that constantly deal with economic and societical strife(Tacoma's papermills and being affected by the crack episdemic) that seem to have the happier persons. Many of the more privileged areas have higher rates of depression and suicide. I think of part of a quote by James Baldwin "If one is constantly surviving the worst, one ceases to be controlled by the fear of what life has to bring." Maybe happy is measured on a level other than material wealth.
