I've watched tons of the survivalist and prepardness videos and it shows all these families arming themselves to the "T" the weapons virtually out numbered the people to use them. Im a former spec ops medic so I've been around all types of new and old small arms, my family and I have our own stratagey but wanted to see what the real worlds view was on this topic.

Thanks
I'll give you the same answer as I give every time I'm asked about which weapon is the best for defense of any kind.
It's the weapon that people have been using since there were people, and it's still the most potent weapon on the modern battlefield, the Human Brain.
Yep. So many folks want to go the "fortress" route. It does have its place, but as you say, firing up those synapses is the better go-to solution--generally there is a better way.
yes, and that way is to be below ground, hidden, except at night, for short periods of time, and only if completely necessary, until things have calmed down a lot, after shtf. About a year or so, I'd say.

Best "weapons" for survival (besides the brain ) would be ones that are multifunctional and serve a true survival purpose other than just "shooting zombies"... hammers/sledges, axes/hatchets, knives, saws, traps/snares, hunting rifles/shotguns.

I would think that as a former "special operations" whatever, you would find whatever weapon that is available would be the best weapon in some hypothetical future dystopia.
