I wouldn't even have known about it except a recruiter I work with is 100% for it...he seemed angry that I wasn't. Suddenly this afterthought has 10's of thousands of people collecting signatures to put it to a vote.
And the vote is a strange one. The 2019 election....guaranteed low turnout.
The People's Republic of Kalifornica is dead broke. Removing federal funds to cities, universities, medical centers, and pension funds would just cause collapse into a heap. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of welfare socialists.
But don't count on it. Ain't happening, no matter the vote.
No need to bomb us, just stop selling us water from Nevada's snowpack and the Colorado river...not to mention how fast the economy would move once we no longer have the entire USA as a marketplace. California trades being the golden state for being the begger country.
The thing is, this group is not new. They've been dormant for a long time, just waiting for the right thing to happen to activate and get attention. No talk on how a future country would operate. Act first, think of the consequences later.
I don't think it will go, but Communists only need to win one election. Strategically, if they get on the ballot in a weird election (i.e. 2019 with turnout of 15-20%) and the illegals get to vote...as residents of Kalifornia...it's not likely, but it's not an obvious dismissal either.
Undoubtedly, Kalifornia would receive support from China and Russia. Both countries, despite domestic issues, have been pouring money in to the area lately.
But, that's enough scaremongering I suppose. We'll see if these turkeys can get it on the ballot.
Wife did a poll of her customers yesterday. Lots of customers she chats and gossips with. It's amazing what people tell their dry cleaners. Anyway, of her customers, 11 she knew well enough and both parties had time to chat.
2 thought it was a detestable idea. They would move if California went this way. Of interesting note, both were first generation immigrants who stressed that they moved to America, not California.
2 supported it, but thought the State was too broke to pull it off.
7 thought it was a fantastic idea and the State would be much better off as a Country. The often cited statistics is that the Californian economy is one of the largest in the world (true) and they felt tired of subsidizing the rest of the country.
After the answer, the follow-up question was if the country was formed as a socialist country, would that change their mind. Interestingly, the answers split then on race and if they were born and raised in the area.
100% of Whites (Natives) were still for it.
100% of Asians (Viet, Chinese and Indian immigrants) were against it.
Obviously, not large enough to be a scientific study, but I thought it was interesting. My wife is heavily conservative but as a matter of business tries to match whatever the customer says, so I don't think there's tremendous bias in the sample.
