Hate to take the side of the cops here, but frankly

1) most cops are not educated in what the laws are before they are turned out into the street (as DH used to say, "Guys I wouldn't trust to carry my books in grade school are now toting a badge and a gun!"). They are taught the basics of self-protection and response, thoroughly educated in the bureaucracy's procedures, and told that they are heroes - so they think that they are out there protecting and saving the world from evildoers. "When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail".

2) If you've ever sat at a dispatcher's desk, you know that people call in to 911 to report suspicious activity - and some are 'way, 'WAY over the top in their fears and hysterias (or simply have nothing better to do than to incite same). Most callers don't know the laws in their areas, and moreover - don't care. If they decide that they don't want a guy walking down THEIR street with a gun, they will make any and every claim to try to get the cops to take it away from them. It isn't just guns, either - I had to put up with a woman who called in on 911 from her cell, who had seen a man throw a cigarette butt out of his window, and followed him for 45 minutes, with a small child screaming in the background noise on her phone, demanding that the cops meet her as she chased this guy down and arrest him for littering!

Pretty much, control freaks and drama queens who demand that cops are their own personal enforcers of their interpretations of right and wrong, are the bane of cops' existence - but god help you if you tell them to STF down and STF up. Then you get to be on the 6 o'clock news for refusing to do as they demand.

This all points to what will happen if there is any expansive civil unrest - there will be endless unanswered calls as they are sorted by urgency, and those who scream the loudest and most frequently now will be in hysteria mode, unable to cope, demanding protection where none will exist, ignorant still of the law and simply demanding that someone, somewhere, in charge come and save them.

It will be evident in time that people these days are more calm..and it is more difficult to stir up the population through there emotions. I would say that most people will hunker down if worse comes to worse and deal with things on a daily basis--Nothing constructive or good ever comes from civil violence and rioting- When there is violence and rioting- the rioters harm themselves...most are not that crazy to cut their own throats and make themselves more poor than needed.... I HOPE.
I disagree -- it's just that some aren't arrogant to think that things in this hemisphere are going to necessarily be better than what other people endure when economies collapse.

Look at Katrina -- many didn't leave but stayed to loot the stores. Many won't stay inside and hunker down, they'll be taking advantage. They will look for excitement, look for homes to break into to steal big screen televisions even if the power is out. Gang types already roam many streets looking for a fight and if the police are tied up in other situations such as fires, they will take full advantage, even setting more fires just for the fun of it.

the main rule after a disaster is, that looters get a pine box to lie down in.

The economy collapsed four years ago. Older folks only a few years away from Social Security will not riot, they don't even have the energy. But younger people, lacking jobs and with heavy student loan debt, just might. It could spread beyond the peaceful "Occupy" protests.

Some of us this last weekend were still buying DVD's, 46 inch Plasma TV's and going on nice vacations. But if Congress does not do something soon, our economic system will collapse and chaos will result. Maybe our credit cards will stop working, or millions of us will be thrown out of our jobs, or our bank accounts will be emptied. Or store shelves will become bare. Who knows!!
How will the social frabic of our society hold up? Will there be huge riots and general civil unrest? Will our government fail? If things get really bad how ugly will it get on the streets of American cities? Your thoughts?
Whoa....mule. I don't believe for one second that the government is going to let another stock market crash with people jumping out windows and committing suicide like in the 20's. Just won't happen. Why the panic? I do believe that this government is run by the people and for the people just like it says and that unless we all stop our belly aching and work as a PEOPLE, there will be some sort of collapse but not as drastic as you are saying.
I think its time that we stop blaming Obama for all that has happened. We are responsible for some of it and as Americans should take some of that responsibility in hand and make this government work again. Yes we are angry, yes we are out of work, yes the welfare roles are increasing but it is time we turned that all around and worked together to make things better. Get our kids on birth control to stop the surge of welfare Moms and Dads. Go to big business people and ask them to help create jobs, take a menial job until things break and above all, stop bad mouthing the only country where there is true freedom to be who you want, live how you want and do whatever you want.
There are people out on the streets demonstrating about their sexual preferences while there are people out on the streets with no homes, no food, no work...take all that energy and go work in a shelter and listen to those people's issues. Who you sleep with and why can't hold a candle to some of their sadness..do something positive. Once everyone works to start paying things forward, things that benefit our country, this country will turn around. A great person once said:
"Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country". JFK it is time for this country to heal and it can't heal until we all find a way to help her heal.

Yes, I expect riots but they will do no good. The jobs are not coming back and rioting will not change that.

Why is this thread labeled-----------" when " ,,,,,,,,, the economy crashes instead of---------" if "---the economy crashes ?

A big difference between the mindset of the people who use/misuse those 2 words.

How, pray tell, would you suggest they not let it happen? Would you have the government enter the market as an unlimited buyer when the indices fall below certain levels? Then the government would own all the equities and we truly would have socialism. The government could obviously create the money to do it but then the dollar would lose its value. Would you like that?

I'm been paying outrageous taxes my entire working life to support welfare recipients, lazy govenment employees, and foreign governments I despise. For some reason this particular half-witted statement of Kennedy's (one of many) has captured the hearts of certain people, presumably those who dream of government jobs.

Remember, apart from government Kennedy never had any sort of job in his life. He didn't even help manage the family fortune. I suppose that was all beneath him.

I've always thought about this and wondered;
If the world radically changes (for the worse) as we know it today.
Would I still wanna live in it?
I'm not so sure I'd like to live in a world that is much worse than it is today, so I haven't taken any steps to ensure my future survival.

I try to enjoy my life and don't worry about armagedon or a global financial collapse.
Given our fragile nature, human beings have worried about this issue since the very beiging of our existence on this planet.
The end will come one day - that's inevitable - but I personally chose not to overly worry about it.
