I want one and am just about decided on the 42 dollar Cuisinart one on Amazon. Anyone have any other recommendations or comments about either it or any other ice cream maker, for that matter? Thanks.
I've worn out three or four of the $20 Rival ones over the last 35 years. A hint, don't store it and have even one little salt crystal in the aluminum tube, puts a hole in it.
I have a Krups one. You freeze the container and there is a paddle that scrapes the side as it spins around and around. After making your batch of ice cream, I think it's better to freeze it overnight before eating. It's a fun small appliance to have especially if you want to control what goes your food.
North Beach- yeah, we had one of those add the ice/salt ones and honestly didn't use it that often. It was a pita to clean, use and was loud. So I thought i'd spend the money on something we'd actually make use of, lol.
Yup, George- that's what I read as well. I think they're pretty much all like that, except of course the massive commercial ones. I read many reviews where people thought it'd be just like the big machines- make it and it's ready to scoop out and eat. And isn't it better to allow icecream to ripen anyway?
Lol Confidence. I'm going to order the Ben & Jerry's recipe book too :0)
back in the day ~~ Dad had a wooden crank ice cream maker. I always got stuck cranking it. Pack the ice and used rock salt. It was worth all my gripping.
we have a 2 1/2 gallon hand crank freezer for big parties and a 2 qt. (freezer bowl) for the kitchen aid mixer. we have always had cows and chickens so cream and eggs are plentiful. we mostly make vanilla. yum.
I'm a novice -- so this is a very basic question……
I'm thinking about buying an ice cream maker….
CAN ANY ice cream maker also be used to make sorbet and frozen yogurt?
Or….
... should I get one of the brand names that calls the machine an "ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet maker?"
ETA: also….
...part o the reason I ask is…I can get a larger ice cream maker, like 2 or 4 quarts….for less than the "ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt" machine which is only 1.5 quarts. (If it's better to have that machine I'll get it. But if I can make all three with the regular ice cream maker than why spend more on the other machine.)
The real difference in ice cream makers is that some have a canister that you freeze before use, and others take lots of ice cubes and salt. I have the bucket kind and it takes a ten pound bag of ice to freeze a gallon of ice cream. Not a big deal because i do it maybe twice a year, but if you make ice cream a lot, the smaller ice cream maker with the insert that you freeze may be more convenient.
