I've been to Myrtle Beach MANY times, it is a nice city and I'm sure a fantastic place to live, but is MAINLY tourism for it is a resort city. I'm sure no one, including myself, has anything against MB, like I said, GREAT place

have you considered Rock Hill? The nearby Charlotte airport flies to ten times more cities at half the price then any airport in South Carolina does. Charlotte itself is just a small drive away and Rock Hill is a college town.

Anderson - just awful including the traffic to the stores and no nearby airport. Clemson isn't too far away, but just live in Clemson instead. Avoid unless your employment is based here.

Greenville - very nice downtown, if you like mountains, this is your best choice.

Columbia - The airport is way overpriced on flights and really feels abandoned half the time. Charleston and Grenville both have nicer downtown area.

Charleston - if you can afford to live in it, this is the king of the nightlife.

Negative. If it was upstate sc wouldn't be the economic engine of the state. Tourism jobs generally don't pay well.

University of South Carolina - News

Tourim drives our ecomony. Those millions of people who trek to our beaches generate billions of dollars in revenue.

I agree, but it isn't the states top industry.

People in the Upstate, especially the pro BMW and Michellin crowd, hate not being number one at everything.
Regardless, the governor's office, the SC Chamber of Commerce, the SC Dept. of Commerce, the SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism Dept, the SC Dept. of Employment and Workforce, ad infinitum ALL say tourism is the number one industry in SC.
This is state-wide tourism, not just on the coast.
Also, as a general rule, the closer to the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson area you get, the more conservative the state becomes.
Myrtle Beach is one of the most expensive areas in the state and has been for over 30 years.

Can you point me to information(links) that says tourism is South Carolina's number 1 industry? If it is, why does the upstate and midlands have a higher gdp? I'm all for tourism. I just don't believe it's the states bread and butter.

I did some quick research, and forestry keeps popping up as the number 1 industry. The point I was trying to make though is, working in tourism doesn't pay that great. That could be why the upstate and midlands have a higher gdp.

"As South Carolina’s number one industry, tourism plays a vital role in our state’s current economy. For many years, tourism has been the major driver of South Carolina’s economy and overall quality of life for the state’s residents."

http://www.newcarolina.org/UserFiles...%20Tourism.pdf

"Tourism is the largest industry in South Carolina according to many economists and saves every household in the state $691 in taxes annually."
