I think Greenville has a much better downtown area than Asheville. It also has more shopping.
THere are a lot of people who move to Greenville after originally planning to move to Asheville. They visited Greenville on the way to or back from visiting Asheville and liked Greenville better.

But the suburban part of Charlotte that is in SC IS in South Carolina. Please refer to the OP's question:do you find SC or NC to be a better place to live?" Are you referring to the limited amount of mountains near the North Carolina border?
I can find two different places in Charleston alone radically different places to live. The OPs question is unanswerable.
Charleston is a wonderful historic city, but is completely different from Asheville. It is steeped in tradition, while lack of conformity is the norm in Asheville. Asheville is a smaller version of Austin without the high tech industry.
Different local cultures, but in terms of uniqueness, you're talking about two of the most distinctive for their sizes in the country.
And without the University of Texas....What does Asheville have again? I passed through last March and the place was barely worth stopping in.
How would you know if it was worth stopping in if you only passed through, presumably on the interstate? Asheville isn't a popular tourist destination for nothing.
I’d say about 20 years ago but you can divide VA into two regions — Northern Virginia is, well, very northern. The rest of Virginia still has many, many areas of “southern-ness”. But, NoVa is dominating in the political voting so the entire state has gone “blue”.
Northern VA has some contemporary Northern traits but it's pretty misleading to say it's "very Northern." Overall VA is still a Southern state, just with some other influences thrown in.
charleston is a wonderful historic city, but is completely different from asheville. It is steeped in tradition, while lack of conformity is the norm in asheville. Asheville is a smaller version of austin without the high tech industry.
