Charleston is SC's only international city and it happens to be the best metro area in the state. It has much to offer-fine dining, excellent performing arts, upscale shopping, beautiful beaches, gorgeous gardens open to the public, 300 years of history and architecture, zone 9a climate, and the only international airport in the state.

Charleston is definitely a nice historic U.S. city.

Greenville is well known as a city with tremendous international investment, not to mention a surprisingly high number of international transplants from all around the globe. The metro area has GSP International Airport, which is also utilized by BMW Manufacturing for direct overseas flights. The nearby mountains and foothills offer spectacular opportunities to explore gorgeous waterfalls, quaint arts & crafts villages, breathtaking vistas, coldwater valley trout streams, and much, much more - all just a short daytrip (half an hour to an hour) away from the bustling city life.

LMAO! I live in Charleston, and while it is a nice city which appeals to many, that should not prevent us from getting our facts straight.

First of all, I don't know what makes a city an "international city," but Charleston does not really have much of an international flair with regard to its people or its businesses. Greenville has a lot more international business investment than any other city in SC - Charleston included. Culturally, Greenville has many nationalities represented with a strong presence that you notice. Columbia has some, too. I see far less diversity in Charleston. Perhaps your point in calling Charleston an "international city" was that it is a widely recognized city, which is obviously true. When it comes to notoriety, history, and tourism, Charleston really shines.

Second, Charleston is not the state's only international airport. Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is in the Upstate, and Myrtle Beach International Airport serves the Grand Strand. A simple Google search would have uncovered this widely known information for you.

Charleston is a nice city, and a favorite of many, but it's not the center of the universe as many people here in the Lowcountry think. Hopefully, as people here travel more and see more of the world, they will come to realize that.

I think many towns are considered citis if they have 25k year-round residents. I know I lived in a "city" that size in New England that was always referred to as a city.

I do agree with you on some points. Charleston is one of my favorite historical cities in the U.S. The architecture is a treasure to enjoy....after spending a good deal of time during my life in New Orleans, I prefer Charleston for architecture and historic atitude. Performing arts are top notch (hard to beat Spoleto) and the city does have the states best shopping (Gucci, Saks, Mont Blanc, etc). After those few points, your opinions start to fall apart and fail to follow fact.

Facts:
Charleston is but one of the international airports in SC. Greenville/Spartanburg is international as well, with custom clearance and a certifided port of entry.

As for international, I will agree Charleston is more recognized by international citizens, but Greenville takes honors as international. The business climate in the Upstate and numerous international industries, have lead Greenville to have not only the highest percentage of international investment in SC, but in the U.S. as well. Try going to the grocery store or out to dinner any day of the week without hearing a foreign language. You can't. German, French, Indian, Italian, Japanese, etc......you will here all of them spoken on a regular basis.

Gorgeous gardens in Charleston.........a gorgeous waterfall in downtown Greenville and an area full of creeks, lush ravines and high country fir trees.

Beautiful beaches....that is an opinion. Most call tSC beaches average beaches. I grew up in Alabama, and while many refer to the Gulf Coast as the "Redneck Riviera", one fact that can not be denied is the fact the beaches are absolutely the most beautiful....pure WHITE sand....not yellow, not brown....WHITE, with beautiful Caribbean colors in the water.

As a South Carolinian, I've VERY proud of Charleston, but I'm also VERY proud of Greenville (now if we could just work on the Midlands). Please try to post accurately. Thanks.

My ind is very open and I'm actually VERY proud of certain things in the Midlands. Aiken, for one. Aiken has the culture and arts of a city 10 times its size. The international equestrian/Polo scene is unmatched, except for the Palm Beaches and the Hamptons. The town is charming, adorable, genteel. I happily take out of state visitors to Aiken on a regular basis.

But not one single thing that you can think of makes you proud of Columbia as the capital of your state. Zero, zilch.
