Howdy all:

We're new to St. "Gorgeous" and are loving it here! Now that we're settled in, it's high time to fulfill a commitment I've made and I was hoping to garner your advice regarding this issue.

I'm trying to identify a state of Utah licensed Ph.D. psychologist, or maybe an MFT-qualified counselor, in our area whose expertise rests in the realm of marital/relationship issues. The trick will be identifying someone who is really good at leaving religious matters out of the counseling equation, i.e., who practices on a totally non-denominational basis. Why, you ask? Well, because one of the involved individuals is an atheist and a long-term apostate from the LDS church. This person definitely would be resistant to therapy from someone who even hints at religious solutions to problems.

I know this sounds prejudiced, but I'm simply trying to be realistic, plus I wish to avoid wasting any person's time (including the therapist's).

If you happen to know of someone meeting these criteria whom you would highly recommend, preferably because you and/or someone you love has had great experiences with the therapist, I would greatly appreciate hearing this feedback. In fact, I'll bet there are many other individuals here in our area who are experiencing pretty much the same predicament, rendering your recommendation all the more helpful and altruistic!!

If you're uncomfortable posting your recommendation directly within this thread, then please feel free to contact me via my contact info link.

Thanks so much! Although a bit late, I wish you and yours a joyful 2011.

A close friend of mine decided to seek counseling here in St. George and made an appointment with a licensed psychologist. When she went into his office he introduced himself, sat down, and asked her, "Who's your bishop?" She couldn't believe it. Never went back, obviously.

Hopefully you'll have better luck!

Find a Psychologist Search | Utah Psych Assoc (http://www.utpsych.org/fapsy/terms - broken link) is the search form for the Utah Psychological Association. There are plenty of non-LDS psychologists in UT - I am one but in SLC. Just call and ask.

What an idiotic comment! No non-LDS psychologists in Utah? We have one such person on this forum, for crying out loud!
