Not the most upscale place, but definitely safe, quiet and close to downtown. No patio tho
I've even overheard that students are even living there and some nearby apartments too. I believe that there is even a shuttle from James street to SU now.

There is. The route was just added. I used to use it myself before I got my car.

I've done extensive research on the subject. Here are my first hand experiences...

Looking To Rent in Syracuse? You're In For A Real Treat

I would recommend that you read my account of apartment hunting, but be very careful about commenting. Moderator cut: Please discuss the topic, not each other. That being said, I highly recommend Steeplechase Apartments if you can afford it. They aren't within walking distance of downtown, but it's like a 15 minute commute via bus. They are really nice apartments in a very safe area. Good luck and let us know what you found!

I don't think the OP has a dog, which can be an issue anywhere. That does make a difference and even if you have one, I've found places that take dogs.

Actually, that thread may give the OP more options. It lists a bunch of experiences and apartment options, depending on one's needs/wants.

This may also help in terms of walkability: Apartments and Rentals - Find a Walkable Place to Live

If you pick an apartment in the Liverpool area, there is co-ed volleyball offered by the Town of Salina Parks and Rec. That could be a good way to meet people too. Town of Salina Web Site
