Lake aside, (I know that is hard to duplicate!)...
Are there any other beautiful victorian like villages similar to Skaneateles in more of the eastern part of the state, like in the Albany area? I'll post this in the general forum as well.
Maybe not exactly like it, but parts of Saratoga Springs remind me of Skaneateles. I like the interesting stores, the lake and the well maintained older homes.
I have to be honest, if I didn't live in Skaneateles, Saratoga Springs would be near the top of my list (my parents live there so happily I have the best of both worlds).
Good luck.
Jo
How about Cazenovia, which is not too far away? So many locals rave about it, even those living in or close to Skaneateles. Maybe the tax rate is better? WinterWonder, I sent you a PM about a week ago - did you get it?
Jo, thank you for the recommendation. We will check it out.
Looking4home - sorry for the delay, I just got back to you this morning.
We will not be moving to Skaneateles - the home inspection fell through. We are heading back to look in the areas we had been looking in all along - New England. Househunting is very frustrating - we just have to keep positive.
All we want is:
- a town with a downtown
- a good parks & rec dept, with many activities for children
- a good school
- a historic home
It's actually hard to find! Is it too much to ask?
Along with Saratoga Springs, another village that has a bit of a Skaneateles feel is Cooperstown NY. Lots of older homes, a sense of history. Check it out!!
You can try Hamilton, which is the home of Colgate University. Clinton outside of Utica would be another good choice and is the home of Hamilton College. Lake George might be another community to look into.
Plattsburg is not yuppy like da "skinny" and Saratoga but has all you state and Lake Champlain is magnificent
