This one turned out to be a house sharing situation, not a private apt

Helen Street is outer Sedgwick; the streets are hit or miss over there, but Helen Street's not bad.

I'm pretty sure I looked at that house a few months ago when it was on the market for sale. IIRC, it's an interesting floor plan, bedrooms are upstairs and the bath downstairs.

I agree that some parts of the north side are okay but it's very hit and miss and is less desirable than nearly any area on the East side, all of Strathmore, most of Eastwood or Sedgewick. As you've already discovered.... there are some unscrupulous landlords mixed in with the good ones and it's also helpful to be cautious when you see "Outer" or "Near". "Outer Sedgewick" and "Near Strathmore" can be dicey or can actually be okay.

The "Too Good to be True" ad for 210 Fellows Ave.... great location. I used to live in the 100 block of Fellows and would only caution that you check the integrity of the property carefully and have in writing who fixes what if there's any issues. That house and one or two others across the street do or did belong to the same person and have been up for sales on and off for the past 25 years or longer.

I know you have your heart set on a house but I strongly encourage you to consider a 3BR flat instead. Houses for rent in the under $1,000 price range are hard to come by in this area and as you have discovered - are often in less desirable areas. If it says no pets don't let that discourage you from calling anyway and asking about options for one well behaved cat. Many landlords will consider that on a case by case basis but if they say "pets allowed" in the ad it opens a floodgate of callers with dogs, cats and multiple pets.

Thanks again phaelon! I have decided you are right - any whole house under $1000 is not going to be worth it (less desirable locations). I think a 2-3 bedroom place in a divided home will be the way we will go. My husband likes Strathmore since he's in a temp situation there now and finds it very convenient to go just 2 miles to work. But he has learned in the month he's been there that not all of Strathmore is desirable either! He is seeing a place in Baldwinsville this afternoon - what's your opinion of the commute from there to downtown?

It takes no more than 15 minutes. You can take either I-690 or I-481 to I-81 to get to Syracuse.

Strathmore closer to say Colvin or South Ave. can be iffy. The closer to Corcoran High and Wadsworth Park, the better.

Well that's not a bad commute at all, thanks!

So would this one in Strathmore be one to avoid?

That neighborhood's immediate area is fine, but if you go down Colvin to South Ave., that's where it is rougher. From what I see on the map and from what I know, I think you would be fine. Here's the area: 512 summit, syracuse, ny - Google Maps

Yeah, my husband said riding in that area on a Friday night you definitely feel like you're in the hood.

What do you think of this general location on the west side?
