I was thinking about this a bit, and I want to hear some opinions. How important do you think (good) teacher retention is to the achievement of students and schools.
If you aren't a teacher please add how you would help to retain them. Any good ideas?
Our district does not want to retain teachers for very long because they get too expensive. They like them from their 1st-5th year and then they want them to move on. The district does pretty well for itself academically. It's a majority minority district but gets good results. Sometimes long term teachers get burned out and aren't that good. (ETA - excpetion are the "star" teachers in science and those Teacher of the Year types.)
Our district tries to retain teachers. I think that it is important to retain teachers and have teachers do continuing education. I learned so much from my Master's Degree. It made me a better teacher and more valuable to my district.
