There is a German word called schadenfreude which means malicious joy, or gloating over bad news.
Why is there this element of schadenfreude over Tesla when they have these kind of incidents?
I think it's generally ignorance. People are afraid of what they don't understand (particularly when its unconventional) and harness an irrational hate/dislike for it. When the Model S first hit the streets with extremely positive reviews quite a few automotive "enthusiasts" simply exploded because the mere idea of an electric car that is able to compete bothers them. It's silly for sure but these aren't the kind of people that are used to rational thinking.

The dealer associations are the mafia of auto sales and aren't getting their cut, so they're calling in all favors from states to hate the Tesla. My son in law works there, and they offer each owner a new vehicle, and this guy refused. They want it to study, so in this case they figure it's owner error.
