No. It's just that if I want authentic Tex-Mex experience, I'm going to go where it originated.

Exercise is key for anything really... but soul food will definitely send the average, sedentary American to an early grave. Probably no worse than that Tex-Mex, though!
You got that right. As a matter of fact, I'll bet my money any day that a man who swallows down fast foods on a regular basis will be much less healthy than the man who eats soul food on a regular basis.

I don't think eating soul food guarantees any type of health risk. My grandmother has always been frying up things all her life. Both her and my grandfather will be in their 90's soon. Both of them, still active, full activity of the limbs, no diabetes, no nothing.

Yes, but you can't beat the ones in Houston and Beaumont: Pappadeaux Country.

Yeah, 100% agree on that one tstone. El Paso and S. Texas are more authentic Mexican dishes rather than Tex Mex. Definitely different. I still like it though, it's good...but nothing beats Tex Mex in Houston and SA.

Since I am in Houston...

I'd have to go with La Mexicana on Fairview for my fave Tex-Mex but I also like chains like Ninfa's, Escalante's, Pappasito's...

Seafood would be second--anything Cajun/Creole, gumbo, etoufee, etc...Brennan's, the old Landry's before total and complete rumination, Gaido's in Galveston, and Denis' Seafood, yum!

Next is Chinese--North China, Shanghai River, China View

Steak would be after that--Lynn's, Taste of Texas, Pappa's, Brenner's.

...and for the best barbecue, Goode Company and Swinging Door in Houston and Richmond, respectively.

I'm going with Taqueria del Sol on Broadway/Park Place/45. You simply can't beat what they give you for $7-8. Their bakery is excellent too, a little too rich for my blood sometimes.

I used to like Los Tios but Skeeters came in and really screwed up a good thing!

This implies Tex Mex originated from SA to the RGV:

Houston is the next closest ''very large'' metro to this area. No surprise you've been able to find a good one just about anywhere around here for decades.

Here's some info on New Mexican:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexican_cuisine

This is more like what I found in El Paso. Green vs. red chiles, more cilantro.

Not really. I guess my reason is that growing up in San Antonio, I lived on the generally black side of town, so I wasn't really exposed to Tex-Mex. The first time I ever had it was during a visit to El Paso.

Well that's because that style of food was brought to this area as it became more populated with many Mexican Americans, but remember that Houston is not originally a "Tex-Mex city".

I know what Tex-Mex is, and I know that my first time having it was in El Paso.

No, I haven't, but I have heard very good things about it. I haven't been out to a steakhouse, admittedly, in about a year. What I wouldn't give for a romantic night out with hubby, no kiddie-friendly places!! All I do lately is eat where there are good kid menus. It's sad but true. I am grateful to live in Houston though, it could be worse...

If you've got your top five restaurants, let us know. I want to hear from you.

Also, very good participation so far in our poll. Keep those votes coming. Home cooking fans, we want to hear from you, too.
