It would be like someone trying to compare UC Berkley or UCLA to Stanford on the basis of enrollment.

Except of course when you realize Texas doesn't have any universities that match those or the other big California universities. But that's a whole other topic.

In which respect? Not saying that I necessarily disagree with you, but just wanted to understand your meaning.

Relative to its size, Austin clearly sprawls the worst. The density numbers may not be dramatically different, but the sprawl definitely shows its ugly side via the traffic.
Comparing population with statistical area doesn't tell you anything about sprawl. I can drive for 30+miles outside of DT Dallas or Houston and hit suburb after suburb.

The reason Austin has ugly traffic is because infrastructure hasn't been properly planned in the past.

Most of the "real" Austinites that I know don't promote the town (why the hell do we want MORE people here??), don't drink the "kool aid" & frankly scratch our heads at the political & cultural oddities shown by the newcomers from the Far West (& NW). The newcomers from the MW & the NE aren't quite as odd for some reason.

FWIW...."Real" Austinites drive trucks, prefer minimal govt, love to float the river & listen to Jerry Jeff - George S & George J, ZZ Top, SRV, RE Keen & Pat Green just like you do. We just think keeping Pot illegal is stupid and that Gays & Lesbians have just as much right to be miserable in a marriage as straight people do.

But as I said, most of the "real" Austinites are looking to bail in the next 5-15 years. (check out the "Fed up Austinites looking to move" thread.)

Also, Real Texans always enjoyed Austin & Austinites. They thought we were quirky....they enjoyed hanging out with us & letting their hair down. Not sure when the hate started? How can you be a real Texan & "hate" Austin (or SA or Dallas or Houston??)
Great post.

Austinites love to spew their outdoor Hill Country gateway mumbo jumbo, but large parts of San Antonio fall into that same category and you don't hear folks in San Antonio spouting off.
Yes really, all I ever read on this forum is the nasty transplants asking if they have to speak Spanish to live in San Antonio.
