Once or twice a year?? You can enjoy those foods once or twice a month and still be healthy and fit.

I love chicken fried steak but I rarely eat it nowadays. I think it's been years, actually.

It's easy to find a lot of blacks and Hispanics who don't listen to George Strait. When people who don't normally listen to country do listen to country, it's often crossover country that gets played on Top 40 radio. I also know a lot of Texans who don't own any boots. I'm not sure if I've ever owned a pair of boots. If I did ever have boots, it was when I was a toddler.

Exactly. According to Waylon, "Bob Wills Is Still The King."

And I'll second the nomination for Ray Benson as state band leader.

Of course. You can't live in San Antonio and not know that Steve Earle grew up in Schertz.

"Crossover country" is an oxymoron and borders on sacrilege. "Crossover country," aka "Nashville pop," is nothing more than pop music that is marketed as country, and thus is played on country radio stations. Stylistically and instrumentally, it does not resemble country music in any way.

West Texas and East Texas are two different worlds. Also, the hispanic/Mexican culture is different from the european culture brought over a few centuries ago, maybe there is some mixing over time but it does not look like much to me (white people eating commercialized/bastardized/altered burritos smothered in crap for breakfast doesn't count) - hence I am not sure if there is a unifying theme for a "Texan".

Maybe:

1. Religious
2. Has on average 3+ children
3. Thinks everything is bigger and better in TX
4. Thinks there is no need to leave the state since TX is the center of the world
5. If (s)he does leave the state - comes back and claims TX is home and nowhere is as great as TX
6. Much prouder of their state than any other citizen of any other state I have been in
7. Gets offended if you tell them there is nothing special about TX
8. ?
9. ?
10. ?

I've noticed even the Hispanic culture is different in Texas than in California. In Cali the punk scene is big among Hispanic youth so you'll see a lot of Hispanics with purple hair, skinny jeans, leather and long hair. In Houston I've noticed if they're not kicker/ranchero they're very stylish, GQ almost, as though they follow the fashion trends of Miami over LA.

Really?

I'm a Texan and only three of the above even come close to fitting my life (and one of those is a stretch).

And this white lady knows where the real Mexican food is served in town and that's where I go for my taco fix. Along with tons of other white/AA/Mexican/Hispanic folks in town. The line is often out the door and in that line you'll find people from every socioeconomic and ethnic group in the area. Taqueria El Lugar is one of the unifying themes for Texans in my corner of east Texas.

Cash only!

I also thought of:

8. Most likely hunts or trophy hunts
9. Most likely works in (or has family that benefits from) oil/gas
10. ???

Same here. I've ridden a horse before but I was wearing sneakers.

I think that has to do with the south as a whole being more image conscious. Even southern whites and blacks seem to dress better than their California relatives.

Has anyone mentioned "Loves to hate the Dallas Cowboys"?

Even though I'm a Texans fan.

Maybe forever hating the Titans for taking the Oilers.
