Im from England and thinking of bringing my wife and daughter to Texas for two weeks. We love Country concerts and love to visit a live rodeo. We would love to finish the last week on the Texan coast but somewhere beautiful. can anyone suggest the best for us. We do have a car, and dont mind local flights.

kind regards Scotty

IMO....

For the coast......Padre Island.

For rodeo.....*Mesquite Rodeo (suburb of Dallas)- it's indoors and a little touristy but it's the real deal.
*Kuekelhan Rodeo - Bonham TX (1 hr. NE of Dallas)....old-fashioned outdoor kind, the largest family owned rodeo in the US (last weekend of July each year).

Concerts....pick a few of your favorite country artists and check their concert schedules......they should be scheduled by March probably and you can go ahead and get tickets on Ticketmaster or on the indidivual artist's website. Many of them appear year round at the Indian Casino's in Oklahoma and in New Mexico (the mountains of northern NM are beautiful and probably much different than anything in England).

Sounds like a fun trip for your family!!

I hear there are working ranches in Bandera that could be a fun place to stay for a couple days. If you like horses, that might be a nice stopover as well.

I live in Abilene, TX, which is rather centrally located in Texas and has much of what you might be wanting, in an area that is easy to drive around. Abilene is just 2 1/2 hours from Dallas-Ft. Worth and about the same to the beautiful Hill Country south and close to the rocky plateaus and landscape of far West Texas.

Here's a New York Times article on a visit to the Abilene area. It has links to attractions and such:

Here's the website of the ranch mentioned in the article where you can stay.
..:: Stasney's Cook Ranch - Albany, Texas ::.. (http://www.stasneyscookranch.com/default.asp - broken link)

You can also stay at Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap (about 7 miles from Abilene), which is highly rated for its barbecue.

Not knowing when you'll be visiting, two of the largest rodeos would be in Ft. Worth and Houston...

Ft. Worth Stock Show & Rodeo 1/11-2/03/08
See Fort Worth, Texas

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo 3/03-3/22/08
See 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ - Entertainment (http://www.hlsr.com/et/index.aspx - broken link)

The Fort Worth Stockyards are a fun place to visit, the police ride horses, wear cowboy hats and boots.
Its like being in a western to visit there.

Austin is a great place for music in general.

While your in Texas, you HAVE to try some barbeque. If you do a search there is a thread about the best barbeque in Texas.

You might also check out Food Network : Healthy Recipe Collections, Party Ideas, Quick & Easy Recipes, Cooking Videos its a TV channel here and they often do programs about barbeque.

The spring is a great time to visit, its not too hot yet and you can enjoy the wonderful wildflowers that grow along the highways.

If your in Texas while its really hot, stop by New Braunfels and float the river, you can rent the intertubes (get an extra with a cooler in the middle for your drinks) and shoot the rapids, their calm so don't worry. I hear there is a great waterpark there now as well. You can also try out the oldest dance hall in Texas, Gruen Hall.

San Antonio also has one of the largest rodeos in the country. Last years attendance was over 1,200,000. San Antonio has several theme parks, historical sites and a great downtown to explore.
