Everyone,

I am looking for advice on where to live, should I relocate to Brownsville in the near future.

I have read the threads about The Valley and would like some advice other than "do not move here". Please help, assuming that it is already a "done deal".

My wife and I are white and have 3 kids under the age of 4. I would be driving into Matamoros for work every day and my wife would stay home with the kids. I am looking for a safe neighborhood where they can feel comfortable taking walks and driving to the grocery store.

Any POSITIVE advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill,
Brownsville is very safe, one of the safest places you can live in the country for a city its size. Matamoros is the one you need to be concerned about in terms of theft. Just stay with the crowd of people and dont' meander into alleys. Common sense.

Anyways, if you can survive the weather down there, then you may just do OK. Good luck.

Hi Bill,

Glad to hear you are looking for some positive comments. Unfortunately, as you may have seen, there are many posters on this form who seem to have nothing better to do than bad mouth South Texas. I suppose they feel they are superior to the folks from the area (like me) and just need to stick it to us a little more.

But, as for areas to look for to live; look at Hudson's development just east of Brownsville Country Club. Also, look at the neighborhoods off of Alton Gloor Blvd (on the north side). You might also consider Rancho Viejo, but there is no major grocery store there. You'll have to drive into Brownsville.

There are also some nice older neighborhoods off of Palm Blvd, and areas just North of St. Joseph Academy.

You can also look at Los Fresnos.

Good Luck.

RGV,
Thanks for the information!
Are these neighborhoods primarily hispanic or primarily white, or are they a mix? It doesn't really matter, but I just want to know what to expect. We are very open-minded people when it comes to race / culture issues and see this as an opportunity for our kids to experience a different culture.

hi, bill!
basically, all the neighborhoods around here are primarily hispanic. i don't know of any area that is mainly anglo. so everything's a mix, which is fine with me. like rgv said--there are some posters on this board (and it's always the same ones) who seem to enjoy bashing the valley. ignore 'em, and welcome to the valley!

Thanks, hellpaso! I appreciate the positive feedback. I will post any updates or further questions, assuming my relocation proceeds as planned. Thanks to RGV and TexasNick, also!

Hi Bill,

We currently live in Brownsville and have lived here for the past 2 years. One of the other posters mentioned locations and they are correct. Homes in the area north of Alton Gloor (The Woods, Woodlands, Cross Country-our neighborhood) are newer, more diverse in population and can range in price from mid 100's to 500's. The school district in this area is Los Fresnos CISD. The schools in this area both Brownsville and Los Fresnos are quite good. The neighborhood is safe and quiet. I would not recommend Hudson Blvd. area due to large mix of lower-cost homes in foreclosure and nicer mid-priced homes.
We are actually selling and relocating to Kerrville if a job offer comes thru for my husband.

Hello everyone out there. Me and my family are considering a move to Brownsville, Texas. We live in New Mexico. Any information would be helpful. I am currently an elementary teacher (Kindergarten) and am currently applying at the BISD along with other close districts as well.
