Lumberton is definately closer to these places in Beaumont! Yes, the traffic can be frustrating from time to time, but it is not horrible. Usually it is the typical rubberneckers that cause the slow downs. They are all within 10-15 minutes max from anywhere in Lumberton.

Actually in Fannett you have the choice of going down 365 to the Prot Arthur wal-mart and lowes in the mid county area. This is a really fast growing shoping area now with new stroes opening seems like every month.Basically a lot easier area to get around than the mall area in beaumont. There is Lowes;circuit city,wal-mart and the small central mall;Texas road house.Chilis ;a excellent Italian restaurant Tuscanys and number other eating places. Not as many as beaumnot but alot easier to get around.

Exclamation contemplating contract in Beaumont.

I've been reading some of the threads about Beaumont, TX and I'm starting to get a little concerned.
I've read that some say it's a 'very predjudice', this worries me in that I am White but my wife is Black.
I've also read that the crime rate is excessively high and that the area is heavily polluted.
I'm hoping that someone there could give me some feedback on this, I'm scheduled to go down there in a few weeks and have until 10/23 to make a final decision to give notice where I'm at.

Thanks for any information you can give me to aide in this decision.

Here's an article in the Beaumont Enterprise (the local paper) about interracial couples in the area which might be of help: Interracial couples battle the obstacles of race with love >> www.beaumontenterprise.com - Journal - Local News (http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/community-news/journal/local/25852064.html - broken link)

Also check out this thread here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/texas...-i-really.html

Hope this helps in your decision.

Brad, we moved here 2 years ago and are due to move in May. We chose West Beaumont and although we are not Catholic, send our child to St. Anne's where we are very pleased. There is also a protestant school All Saints, which has a great reputation, too. Just found this site, am happy to answer any questions. Would reconsider Hamshire/Fannett- The beaches are in such bad shape after Ike. Amy

Default Moving to Beaumont

Hi, not sure that you got my first reply...anyway. I am new to Beaumont. We were transferred here 2 years ago and we were forced to buy a home even though we knew we would only be here 2 years. It was all rather daunting since I lived in TN and really, knew no one with much knowledge of Beaumont. We were forced to buy because, as you know, there was a housing shortage from Rita and we could not justify paying 2200 on rent for a 30 year old home in an Ok part of town when we could buy a 250k home where we wanted. Anyway, ended up buying in the West End, off Dowlen. I have to say, I really like it here minus the weather. Where I live, my home has gone through Rita and Ike and sufferd only minor damage. We have never flooded although I understand near Gladys road that does happen a lot inspite of all the new drains.
We bought to send our son to the local schools in 77706 and at the last minute we decided to go with private. There are a few private schools to choose from 2 that I know have a great reputation. We have been pleased.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have. We have enjoyed the area. The West end sports programs are really great and I have everthing I need within a few miles of my home. The people are nice. I think you might really like it.

Amy,
Thank you for the information. We are leaning towards private school as well. I think we are looking forward to the weather as we like being outdoors and have little ones. I don't mind the beaches being torn up though feel really sorry for those that lost homes along the ocean. I wonder if you can still drive on them? I think we will try to move a little south of college street due to my wives job, however we are really looking at the west side as well. I just don't think she would want to commute from Lumberton everyday. You have got me thinking now about flooding after Ike. Are there any bad parts of the area for flooding? Do you happen to know if the farmers market is any good? We are hoping there will be move to do with other cities being closer, 1 hr Houston, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, NO, Dallas, Mobile, long trips to Padre, the Florida coast. It will be nice not having to drive through Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Birmingham to get to the gulf coast.

Thanks for the info.
Brad

Default Moving to Beaumont

For those contemplating moving to Beaumont, I would say think again. This area is pretty country and there are lots of rednecks here.

If you like small towns, you might like it. If you have lived in big cities with well planned neighborhoods that have amenities, you will be disappointed.

The public schools in all these areas are not so great, not just in Beaumont. There are children within the Beaumont schools who are doing well. Private school choices are limited but may be okay for the size of the population here.

Many people like the short commute to all the places they need to be and the good thing is that Houston is so close.

If you are thinking of moving to Fannet, beware of flooding.

Personally, I am not happy here and I am praying for a transfer so we can move out. I love big city suburbs and planned neighborhoods.

Well that makes one of us, planned neighborhoods are okay but I am in Irvine right now and personally I can not stand it. Everybody has to be hip to the newest thing and everybody here looks like lemmings. Give me an acre of land and a home 4 times of the size of the ones out here for 1/4 of the cost please!
