Some of those places may have only incorporated recently to satisfy some state or county regulation. I say that only because listed is The Village of Salado. That may be to satisfy the quaint shopping district for taxation, alcohol or other regulation purposes. But my dad was born in or near Salado, I've heard of the place my entire life and his mother's family name lives there.

And... Salado Lodge #296, A.F.&A.M. was chartered in 1867.

Default The Town of Providence Village

The Denton County subdivision of Providence Village voted to incorporate as a town in May. The community, which has approximately 5,000 residents, elected its first mayor and council last Saturday.

Looking for the law that allows the Texas legislature to for an area to incorporate. Does anyone know if it exists; and if so, where can I find it?

It is interesting too to know the reasons that many of them incorporate. Many of those listed above, that I'm familiar with, were probably doing it to keep from being annexed into larger city nearby.

I read just the other day that Carl's Corner, the truck stop on IH-35, was motivated to incorporate the neighborhood, so he could legally sell liquor in an otherwise dry county.

What else does incorporation allow a community to do?

I think the main purpose of incorporation of small cities is to prevent annexation by bigger cities. This is the explicit reason for the incorporation of Coyote Flats, east of Cleburne and south of Keene. That's one addition I can report since 2008.

Coyote Flats, Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In some cases, there may be a desire for more services or more zoning and land use regulations than the county government can accommodate. In a small but densely developed area people may want better streets, garbage collection, water service, or zoning control than the county or a utility district is able to provide. Such a small area may not have much clout with the county commissioners, so they can form their own city and have all the clout they want.

Interesting bit about Weston Lakes - it is essentially a guard gated city, and even has a "moat" (not that anyone who lives there thinks like that, just an astute/whimsical observation on my part.)

This is because it was a master planned community that incorporated to avoid being annexed by either of its neighboring cities of Fulshear or Simonton.

Interesting thread, glad it got a bump. Would like to see an updated list myself.

Scratching my head to think of any others besides Providence Village that have come into existence here in the northern Dallas burbs, but can't think of one. The city of Westminster in the northeast corner of Collin County went the other way a few years back, voted to dis-incorporate.... if that is the proper term.
