My argument is that the ELECTORAL COLLEGE chooses the president.

Your argument is that the ELECTORAL COLLEGE wasn't popular back then.

That doesn't change the FACT that the E.C. chose the president, and it doesn't change the FACT that Lincoln got 59.4% of the Electoral Votes.

Yes, Lincoln only had 40% of the popular vote. He still had a majority of Electoral Votes.

Bush only had 47.9% in 2000...Gore had 48.4%. Why didn't Gore win? Because Bush won in the Electoral College. Bush had a majority of Electoral Votes.

Face the facts - the popular vote does not choose who wins the presidency. The popular vote within each state does choose electors who choose who wins the presidency. Lincoln gained a majority of these electors' votes. THAT is why he won.

By the way, Lincoln won 40% of the vote without even being on the ballot in 10 states.

So go ahead and keep on ignoring the facts. Lincoln won a MAJORITY in the electoral college, and that is why he won the presidency. Arguing with that is not arguing with an opinion; it is arguing with historical fact. I don't think you want to do that.

I'm not sure whether to or

One thing is for certain - Jrsgun is very stubborn. It's too bad that he/she relies on others' rhetoric rather than on his/her own reason, which I know he/she is quite capable of doing.

You may want to consider the electoral college, that is your porogative, but I look at it from actual votes. Showing what the actual population felt at that time. Now get off the the electoral college kick and get back to the subject at hand. Texas Secede.

FYI,
the military is loyal to the US and its Commander-in-Chief (Big boss) is President Barack Obama.

Just answer this one question,
Should soldiers be loyal to the US and its Commander-in-Chief
or should they be loyal to the state of Texas and Rick Perry?

yeah about 95% of the people on Fort Hood, Fort Bliss and Lackland AFB would be much more loyal to the United States of America than they are to Texans simply because they are not Texans.

As I have repeatedly stated on this particular thread, I am not a secessionist. But I do sympathize with the basic motivations and reasons of many of those who are.

This is hardly something new. There is a good reason why many states are passing such legislation/resolutions re-affirming the 9th and 10th ammendments. It is because the federal government has gotten totally out of hand and exceeding its constitutional authority. And has been for a long time.

While I might agree that actual secession (at this point in time, at least) is, in a lot of ways, totally unrealistic and going overboard, "Washington" scoffs at the underlying sentiments at its own peril.

Let's get something straight -- at least as I see it (which ok, don't amount to jack sh*t) -- the federal government is a creation of the soveriegn states. Not the other way around. And it needs a complete overhaul.

As to the question you brought up as to where "should" loyalty lie? Well, of course, within the confines of the Constitution, to protect the United States against all enemies, foriegn and domestic, naturally it does and should recognize the President as Commander-in-Chief.

BUT...there is an important qualification. That is, the said recognition is if and only if the president (or Congress, or Supreme Court) limits it use to enforcing only those purposes orginally intended and specifically spelled out.

As a final note, anybody is only fooling themselves if they think most in the military will blindly enforce the orders of a federal government which makes an overt move against the Bill of Rights. Such as (and yep, some want to do it) repeal the Second Ammendment. Or, even in the event of secession (which again, I don't support) use deadly force against their own people.

Just like in 1861, there would be officer commisions resigned, and defections among the enlisted. The United States is still, thank God, free enough that most military personel don't owe blind allegiagance to the Executive Branch if the alternative means killing their own countrymen if they themselves embrace the principles they are ordered to suppress.

Thank you TexasReb, secession did not start without state sovereignty being threatened by the Federal Government. As stated a lot of times in this forum, which has increased to 28 states proclaiming state sovereinty ,Texas is not alone on what is a beginning of possible secession by more than Texas. The United States is no longer united in Barack Hussein Obama's way of doing things as a Presdent.
