Amarillo and surrounding areas
How do you like living in or around Amarillo? How's the schools, area, people, cost of living, things for kids to do, etc? Any information or discussion would be helpful. Thanks!

I have lived in Amarillo for over 30 years. I have an 8 yr old child. Amarillo is a good place to raise kids. Slower pace compared to larger cities in TX. The schools are good for the most part. There are several things to do with kids such as parks, a hands-on science center, minor league sports (hockey, baseball, arena football). There are several activities that are free or low cost. The gem of the area is Palo Duro Canyon-great for camping, hiking. High school football is king of Frinday nights. The people are generally friendly and welcoming. Really just depends on what your needs are.

I have only spent nights there when traveling, but I think, from what I have witnessed (except for the weather) I would live there in a heartbeat. In fact, I have always been sorry, when we left the DFW area we didn't settle in Amarillo instead of NM. I am sure we would still be there today. It is small town, big city all in one.
Of course had we moved there we wouldn't have found Bella Vista and that would be sad..

Hi! We live in Midland but are going to Amarillo this Fall for a three day weekend. If you go to the Amarillo Visitor's website,
Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council - 800.692.1338
they have four "kid" friendly itineraries that you can download. These itineraries were created by local elementary school children and are their favorite things to do. It's really neat and we picked some activities from all of their itineraries.

I lived in Amarillo for 13 years and moved away to the PacNW 4 years ago. I miss Amarillo and the Panhandle so much. I'm trying to get back but finding work has proved to be difficult. I wouldn't hesistate moving to Amarillo at all.

Thanks for the information, I will definitely visit the site. I have a kindergartener so I am wondering how the schools compare too.
I really appreciate all the input I loved visiting, and have family there, but it's been awhile. I've never really heard a bad thing about the Panhandle Seems like a wonderful place!!
