I think my parents will be getting a new vehicle in the next couple of months for my mom. I think she is leaning towards a used 4runner. Are there any years she should steer away from? Or any known issues or concerns with certain year models?

From my limited knowledge, they are supposed to be a pretty nice SUV. Truck based, though, so, not as smooth as a newer crossover type SUV.
I had an FJ Cruiser, which is built on the same platform as the 4runner, and it was a great vehicle.

She wants a truck based SUV. My dad has a decked out Toyota Tundra that she really likes. So I think the 4runner would be a good contender for her. She had a jeep wagoner back in the day when I was learning how to drive (I drove that thing around everywhere!). Then she had a conversion van that has ling since died. But she's been without a car for a couple of years now, and is slowly going insane about it. So she is ready to get what SHE wants! Ha!
I wonder if a used jeep Cherokee would do for her as well? How is their reliability? They would not get anything new.

We have had both, but probably older than you would want now. The 1996 4Runner was horrible. Lots of plastic body parts broke, the transmission needed rebuilding at 90k, and the head gasket blew at 99k. Luckily Toyota repaired it on a "secret" warrant that went to 100k, we just made it. It also ate up front brakes, we got 10-15k on pads and every time the rotors were warped and had to be replaced. The mechanics said it was due to the engine/trans having too much weight for the rotors, made thinner to save weight and get better gas mileage.
We had two Cherokees, the 1989 went to 180k before we traded it in on a 1997, both were trouble-free except for a minor smog related problem on the 1997 that only cost about $100 to fix.
we had an 08 4 runner for a few years and had zero issues with it. Pulled the boat it needed to (a ranger fiberglass boat including on the move from WI down to SC), the 4wd handled the heavy snows in WI when they came, and gave us fairly decent ride and mpg's when we were taking it back and forth between the 2 states.
The people I have known with 4 runners have been very reliable. Esp the older 4 cyl models. Those engines are built proof 22RE, best Toyota ever built.
But one of them had the same issue as Hemlock, brake wear outs.
I have one. They're very well made vehicles. My friend has a 98 with 260k on it and it runs like a champ. I have a 2004 and it runs great with a 104k. They're pretty expensive used because they hold their value so well. I'd reccommend 2003 and onward.
What can you tell me between an older model Nissan Pathfinder and 4runner? I've had Nissans and they were all great cars, but I bought them new, and none of them sphere an SUV. I know the older style is more truck like.
