I count it as a case of "to each their own", but my preference is for something more interesting than the beach as well. To me, beaches are boring. We live within four hours of the ocean and have visited it about six times in the last 20 years. You look out and see a lot of water; look down and there's nothing but sand; look behind you and .... well, usually a lot of ugly development. Though, here on the east coast, you can go inland a bit and come upon a lot of marshes to explore. Plenty of wildlife to be seen there. The last time we went to the ocean, we got a place on the beach so we could leave the windows open and sleep to the sound of the surf, but spent our days inland, birding and looking for wildlife. Had to use the Sooper Dooper Skeeter repellent; those things were big enough to carry off our small dog
The city pool seems like a better fit for the OP since it doesn't have sand or fish. Me, I'd rather swim with the fish.
Sorry, my reference was to the OP about the sea being a toilet. I've heard stories from lifeguards about what they find in a public pool and everyone knows about the urinating that goes on. I don't think the OP would feel any safer in a public pool.
Unfortunately women seem to love it, but I hate it.
Every time I hear about someones dream vacation its always some island or sandy beach. But to I loathe the beach and think its disgusting. Its humid, it smells like dead fish, sand gets everywhere, the waters salty, theres creepy fish around you that might bite you, its crowded, fish use that water as a toilet, etc. I much prefer vacationing in the mountains or a nice city. Even a place like Lake Tahoe where the water is fresh and has no creepy fish in it.
I love the ocean. Was there this morning actually. May go again to one of my favorite restaruants to have some fresh fish for dinner before the Laker game.
It almost as wussy as people from the south complaining about getting two inches of snowr, while people in the north are getting 10 inches and 30 below temperatures on a regular basis.
Most natives I know dont complain about it...its the Northern transplants that complain because thats what they left in the first place.
Everybody I know had a ball when it snowed...We also love our beaches and arent afraid of fish or sand.
I'm with you. I like looking at the beach, maybe walking around collecting seashells or something, but I wouldn't want to spend the whole day there. I get sunburned really easily and there are always too many people. Also, any time that I've been in a lake or pond I've stepped on something sharp and cut my foot...I hate that. And I will not wear water shoes, those things weigh you down.
I'd love to go scuba diving sometime though, and explore the ocean. I like fish

Well, the beach is certainly not for everyone, but I think you are in minority.
When I think of the beach, I think of hot white sand, warm turquoise water, the smell of oil, a good book...everything that is relaxing...(although I only get to relax like that when I'm alone, without my son).
