Hello all,
Looking at possibly touring the west coast from Victoria BC to Mexico border by bicycle. Has anyone done this, or at least part of it? I have found a book that describes it in detail, but would like to know of any first hand stories.
Is the 1-5 safe to travel on? Would the PCH be a better option?

You probably won't be permitted to ride on many stretches of I-5. Most freeways don't allow bicycle traffic.

We have done Carmel Area to Los Angeles.
Boyscout trip, around '91 or so.
You can bicycle most of it and then you get warnings, to *get off the highway*.
When that happens, there are frontage roads.
I assume that it is like that for the whole trip you are planning.
On your own, I would be really careful, and trust nobody !!!

Had long springy sticks with flags mounted on each bike.
Really bright flashers.
All riders had neon-orange vests.
Lead rider and rider at end of group had Walky-Talkies.
One motor home with wife of Scout master was there everyday.
Each day, two more cars driven by a parent (taking turns),
all in radio contact with each other..
Never felt we were in jeopardy ...
But we always rode *single file* !!!

I think, that *by law* you HAVE to give more road clearance.
With most people thinking that traffic laws are just a philosophy,
who does nowadays ????
Sad but true !!!

Today, I often see *lone* bicyclists on the highway.
What surprises me, is that they do not have bright clothing on !!!
We see something *moving* ahead if us, could well be a *wanderer* or a *cow*,
and then we finally recognise the figure, and *see* a cyclist* !!!
Often, also, we notice clothing that is meant for racing ...
Especially the aerodynamically shaped helmet !!!
But then that bike is loaded to the hilt !!!

I did a group tour back in the 80's. We rode from San Francisco to San Diego taking US 1 the whole way. We stayed at campgrounds and hostels. It was a great trip but my info would be too outdated for you.
