I am thinking of taking a vacation this winter to an exotic island destination. I've been looking into airfare and hotels for some of the islands in the South Caribbean and they all seem really expensive (I want to spend $2,000 or less for 2 people for 5-7 days, if possible) and impossible to get to (for example, to get to Martinique you have to fly to Haiti, then Guadeloupe to get there!).
What islands would you suggest? I don't want to spend a fortune (hotel+airfare<2k for 2 people if possible). Must have things to do (good dinning/nightlife), nice beaches, and snorkeling.
I have been to Turks and Caicos (voted best beaches in the world several times!). Love it there. It is gorgeous. Go to Fodors.com and read bout it...
Love the Grand Cayman Islands too. Went there several times but more pricey there since they add 25 percent tax onto everything!
The United States Virgin Islands with a choice of St Thomas, St Croix, St John and Water Island. Under the US flag, gorgeous beaches and so much more. No sales tax and excellent duty-free shopping for US citizens.
TripAdvisor is an excellent source of information as is VInow.com. Cheers!
My pick would be Bermuda. It has beautiful beaches, easily to navigate, clean and you do not have to stay at the hotel the entire trip due to crime. Which is a problem in alot of other destinations.
Hmm in your budget the nicer, safer islands you can rule out
The cheapest way to see bermuda is by cruise ship as they dock for several days..you can explore all you want & go back to the ship to sleep and eat.... but winter may be very cool there
Aruba is fabulous but for $2k budget for 2 it's going to be tough to pull off
Winter in the Caribbean....that's high season..nothings cheap

Great advice about the cruise... I'm not a big fan of cruising, but we did a 7-day eastern carribian cruise - gave me a great sampling of 5 different islands/cultures... its that cruise that helped me understands which specific islands I would go back to (or would not go back to) for a 1 island non-cruise vacation... plan to do a 7-day western carribian cruise for the same reason... its like a sampler plate at a restraunt before sinking in big bucks for the singe meal..
