Hi Everyone!

So I am considering a job opportunity in Tucson after a >decade-long residency in the Westwood/West LA area. I visited Tucson a couple of months ago and was not thrilled with the scenery. I'm more of a Bay Area/Seattle/Oregon/Santa Monica type of girl and am happiest among other young professional "movers and shakers." But considering the horrible job markets in SoCal/ other ideal areas + this awesome Tucson job offer, I might just make the move for at least a couple of years...

My deal-breaker is, however, the lack of power yoga studios in Tucson. Or at least good ones. Granted I only stayed in Tucson for maybe 2 days but I googled and yelped every yoga/power yoga studio in and around Tucson and was surprised (especially considering the nearby college community) to find nothing equivalent to LA's power yoga (more specifically of the Bryan Kest/Santa Monica Power Yoga) variety. I'm pretty much a yoga freak and need a yoga studio with the following:
1. A flexible schedule (offering more than a few classes/day especially after work hours and on weekends),
2. Fairly high impact (breaking a sweat without resorting to Bikram...which I can not tolerate),
3. Within a 15 mile radius of my workplace or eventual residence. Seeing as how I thrive in a graduate (no undergrads!) school environment, I would probably end up residing around the U of A grad/med school area...but this isn't set in stone yet.

The only yoga studio that I could find online that was equivalent to the power yoga in LA was Arizona Power Yoga. But when I went to visit for a class, I was pretty disappointed. The yoga studio was closed mid-day and appeared to be quite small and there were only 1 - 2 classes per day and not daily (the online schedule was pretty misleading). Other yoga studios looked like simple Hatha, Vinyasa flow, etc. Which I guess can be pretty cool but I'm a 29 year old female who loves yoga for spiritual and physical/cosmetic reasons. My back literally aches if I don't practice at least twice a week. I also want a butt-kicking practice and be amongst similarly-minded yogis.

Any fellow power yogi's in Tucson? I appreciate any tips especially from those who are familiar with Bryan Kest's power yoga or primal/kickboxing yoga.

Sorry so long but wanted to be specific!

Namaste and happy holidays! So glad I found this forum!

Welcome to City-Data!

First, Tucson, is never going to be comparable to the Santa Monica/Westwood area with which you're familiar. So your expectations will never be met in terms of available services, lifestyle, etc.

Considering the current economy nationwide, if power yoga is a "deal-breaker" for you, above and beyond more mundane criteria, I sincerely wish you luck. Because you're going to need it!

From what I've witnessed Tucson is peaceful, private, & contemplative, not really a "movers & shakers" kind of place. If you "thrive" on that kind of lifestyle you may wither here.

There are a LOT of graduates students & educated people here and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think you can get away with compartmentalizing whom you live near. If you live anywhere near the U of A you will likely be interacting daily with (gasp!) undergrads.

Before you move, take more than "maybe 2 days", perhaps a week or two to see if any of your needs other than a power salary will be met. The old adage "Money doesn't buy happiness" is as true now as it has ever been (not saying it doesn't help!)!

If salary is not your strongest motivation, be sure you are willing to ignore or compromise your other stated needs. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies!

I do have other criteria but at this point, I have to consider the salary as I have quite a substantial amount of education debt and some family members I wish to support (I owe them!). So I'm willing to try out a new area at least short-term. I know it sounds corny but power yoga literally changed my life so although it may seem like a trivial requirement for some [people], its a must-have for me. My field of work isn't necessarily the most ergonomic and its pretty fast-paced and high stress. Power yoga is my cocaine.

I agree with brooks2007. The people in Tucson were SO SO incredibly sweet but I definitely got stared at. Possibly because I'm Asian and the diversity in Tucson is pretty minimal. Then again, I also got stared at in Scottsdale (again, minimal diversity but much improved over Tucson). But at least in Tucson, I had several elderly gentlemen come up and joke around with me and made me feel more comfortable with being an out-of-state newbie.

As for the undergrads. Yes, yes, I know. I can't seem to get away from them around the UCLA area either (sigh). Seeing as how I "might" enter as a single gal from SoCal who knows no one in Tucson, I would ideally at least like to reside around people with a similar background and mentality. I might "wither" and be incredibly depressed sans-friends, family, but I'm willing to make the best of this situation at least short-term. And if all else fails, at least I know where to get some prescription meds that will keep me well bathed in serotonin! Just kidding.

Please reply fellow yogis!

I must say that your post is strange to me. You are very into yoga and need to be around movers and shakers?? Maybe that is just a strange combo in my mind.
Anyway, if you really want to explore yoga and its foundations, Tucson can do that for you far and above many other places. Here, you can jog up a canyon and do yoga on a rock surrounded by nothing but nature. To me, that is yoga.
YMMV

Oh and maybe you should meet up with a friend of mine there who is of Japanese decent. No one looks at him or pays any attention to his "asian-ness."

Hi.

I read your initial post and it resonated with me on many levels. An energy company will be relocating me to Tucson and the salary was a hard to pass up. With that said, I too gravitate towards movers and shakers and the cities you mentioned. As a young professional, I would like to get your perspective on what it has been like for you now that you live in Tucson. I look forward to your reply.

Thanks
