Still think Letterman is better that Leno - that said, he should have retired years ago, like maybe 5 or 10 and hung it up with some dignity. Perhaps it has been since his bypass that he's seemed so much worse.
just wanted to add real quick that while I don't know exactly what charities he supports--I did watch a show some time back and it was divulged that Letterman gives millions to charities but does so quietly and doesn't want the recognition for doing so.
Just sayin......
I worked for CBS at one point in my life and still know some people there. Dave is extremely generous but in a very quiet way. In addition to contributing to charities, he also helps many people directly, paying for operations and such. He's unusually generous with the staff of his show and families are included in the fun activities. Knowing quite a few CBS corporate execs, I can especially vouch for the fact that Dave lives much less pretentiously than most people at his enormous salary level, most of which comes to him because of the success of his production company, rather than his hosting duties.
I don't watch Dave's show that often, but I have tuned in more often lately since I've gotten addicted to Craig Ferguson. I've actually enjoyed the Dave rants I've seen ... because I usually agree with their content and I've been in a ranting mood myself lately.

MUCH better than Leno, that is for sure. His NBC shows were more Conan like, I loved the old Chris Elliott days. The panicky guy, the guy under seats, etc. That was good stuff.

Yeah, Chris Elliott was hilarious! Everything you mentioned there was funny plus many of the other re-occuring folks like Larry "Bud" Melman (that quirky little old man). All those wacky stunts he used to do were funny, like throwing stuff off that 5 storey building and filming it in slow motion, showing up at various unannounced places with a camera crew, yelling crazy stuff out of his office window with a bullhorn to the sidewalk below..."Al Roker is on the loose and he's not wearing pants!!! Run for your lives!!''....lol. And then there was the extremely wacky guests like that "Brother Theodore" guy that showed up from time to time....that guy was just nuts!...lol. You never knew from night to night what kind of crazy stuff was going to happen. The old show, "Late Night With David Letterman" on NBC, was absolutely hilarious. I think Dave was having fun back then, that was the difference.
Sure, but throwing a tax deduction at a charity is one thing. Getting your rear out there and DOING something is totally different. If you get out there and people see you doing it, it brings more awareness to the cause and more people are likely to DO something.
THAT'S what I'm talking about. Throwing money at a problem is one thing---and many wealthy do that for tax purposes. DOING something is very different. Rachel Ray is involved in some program or charity that exposes young children to healthy cooking and such. No, it's not digging irrigation ditches in Ghanda, but she is DOING something.

Wonder if that was part of his goal of getting into some staffers' pants.
I used to watch him every day, I stopped a few years ago, he is just an angry old man now.
Waiting for Conans new show!
Me too!
I'm NOT defending Brett Favre by any means, but Dave was rejoicing in Brett's latest drama...and the whole time I thought, "Look who's talking!"
