It occurred to me that for a nation whose main goal is to propagate and beget more children, they could be using the 'ole turkey baster method, finding men who are fertile and implanting into the various handmaidens, with no need for a handmaiden to live with a family or have relations with any of the men.

But then that wouldn't make for a very interesting story, I suppose.

In season 1, the whole household was present. Just another inconsistency as the show moves further away from the book.

What is the inconsistency?

Commander Lawrence's Marthas were present in the parlor room for the scripture reading portion of the ceremony. They wouldn't have gone up to the bedroom with them though, as only Serena and Fred were in the bedroom with June since the first episode of season 1.

You can't justify your actions through a misunderstanding of the Old Testament's laws and codes with a turkey baster.

That wouldn't be Biblical. They're following the story in Genesis of Rachel and Bilhah.

No, they were there for the beginning (reading) but not during the act.

It’s really creepy how the citizens see nothing wrong with how they live and the fact they are raping these women and stealing their children and holding them prisoners against their will. I think also that the other commander has the hots for Serena.

Even in the Bible, God didn't tell them to do that. It was the wife's idea, since she didn't believe she'd ever be able to conceive a child. And her idea didn't exactly bring happiness for the three of them like she thought.
