Ive also lived in other cities that are similar sized as Tyler outside of Texas that didnt have even half of the dining options for ethnic foods/Asian cuisine that Tyler does.
I totally agree with this. Tyler has TONS of locally owned restaurants and many of them are "ethnic." I can't remember the last time I ate at a chain restaurant in fact, and my husband and I eat out often in Tyler.

My daughter lives in a metro area twice the size of Tyler and it doesn't have all the dining options Tyler has.

I guess I haven't really found my restaurant groove, then. Aside from El Charro and the Taj Mahal, I really haven't found much I'd care to go out to and isn't a chain. It's not so much the variety or lack thereof, I am more pointedly referring to the fact that my wife and I don't find much in the way of "ooh, we gotta come back here" places.

Consider these: Just by googling Tyler Area Restuarants - I selected about 10 per cent of what came up - many more you COULD be interested in, you've just got to look, lol

https://local.yahoo.com/info-1917571...,%20TX&fr=lsrp Now this ONE is a Chain, but likely you've been here, about two years old, so some of the "new" is wearing off, sorta

Yes sometimes copy and paste did not work well on first and only attempt - but I would find it highly UNLIKELY you wouldn't find restaurants you would surprisingly enjoy, oh well.

Alright, you listed a few that did manage to slip my mind. And gave me a few options I haven't yet even looked at real hard. The wife likes Happy's and while I am not partial to The Egg and I, she loves it. Basil Thai is near our house and makes for a good quick meal to pick up. Yamato is alright, nothing poor nor special. We are actually friends with one of the proprietors of Breakers - good little place but her shellfish allergies mean we don't go often. I love Villa Montez.

I do need to get to the Pho place. We also tried a ramen house on S. Broadway next to Cheddar's and it was actually really good! I am a big eater though and that's a light meal for me. Little Italy, Mario's, and Coyote Sam's are on my list to try.

Thanks for the list!

Sure, I just didn't want you to miss something you might enjoy, now, what I did was just google - Tyler area restaurants, there were probably 50-100 more I didn't list have "no clue either" about them, and there were many small chains listed I did not include. Best of luck. Bye, lol

Jack Ryan's, Dakotas, The Grove, Bernards - yum - those are four fabulous locally owned restaurants. Oh, and the Thai Kitchen and FDs - two more locally owned delicious places. So many more, but those are some of my favorites.

Hey! I went on this post once before last march and never came back to see other responses. I hope you and your wife have gained some great insight since you posted this. My husband and I are looking to fly to Texas soon. Still in the works. We are looking into the outskirts of Waco. My husbands job only has locations in the major cities and Waco, so we decided on the smaller city. One town we probably would have really considered, if not for the job locations, was Temple. It's a perfect location. Right in-between Waco and Austin. About Thirty minute commute to both. Seems like it's a good town to invest in before it builds up.

I'm from the Riverside area of SoCal and my husband is from Vancouver WA, where we currently live. We're 10 minutes from Portland Oregon and are itching to get out! Best of luck to you guys!

Mod cut. FD's is not "locally owned". There are FD's all over Texas, and Missourk and possibly other states. FD's is a "chain".

Tyler is dotted with chains all over the place. There are few mom and pops. Longview on the other hand it's the opposite. It's more mom and pop and less chains.

Mexican food - Mercado's and La Posado's are regional restaurants although I think the originals are the Tyler restaurants

Buffett - Loggin's, Sweet Sues

Pizza - Pazzeria (another regional chain which I don't consider a chain like Papa John's is a chain), Bruno's Pizza and best pizza imo is Top It Off Pizza

Daniel Boone's is another locally owned, so far as I know
