Here's my story. I lived and worked in NJ all my life up until March 2011. April 2011 I moved to NC and took my NJ job with me and worked from home. I got laid off from my NJ job November 2012. Collected severance then NJ unemployment benefits until July 2013. Got a great temp job in NC in July 2013, pended NJ unemployment. Thought job would go permanent but it will be ending in December 2013. Here's my question. I still have benefits remaining on my NJ unemployment claim which doesn't end until January 2014. Do I reopen the NJ unemployment benefits, can I? Do I open NC unemployment benefits? If I reopen NJ benefits, do I file extension from NJ or just open NC benefits.....confused

Yes, you should reopen the NJ claim. You can't count on extensions, and even if they still exist into 2014, your working in NJ will probably cause you to have to try for benefits in NC.

Here's and update. I was able to reopen NJ benefits that were suppose to end on January 14th, well they ended on December 28th. I then tried to file a claim with NC and they denied me benefits due to lack of wages, so now I have no money coming in. I was only on unemployment from March 2013-July 2013. I had wages for the entire first quarter of 2013 and the entire last quarter of 2013. I am protesting the denial of benefits, sent in copies of checks, W2's with the Wage Transcripts and Monetary Determination forms. I currently have a call into NC Unemployment will see how this goes. Will keep you posted for people that may run into this as well. Wish me luck.

NC is only showing wages for last quarter of 2013, which isn't enough. You need two quarters. NC probably won't use the NJ wages.

When you reach the bye of your NJ claim in March, you should reapply for benefits in NJ. The LAG earnings from the NJ not used in your first claim, plus the NC wages which NJ will use if you ask, should create a requalifying "combined" claim. Call NJ and speak to a rep to do this.

You will also receive a much better benefit - and longer - from NJ than NC - which reduced its max benefit to $350 for up to 20 weeks tied to UE rate. NJ max benefit is $624 for 26 weeks - no connection to rate of unemployment.

No clue why you are in NC, but you couldn't have picked a worse state. NC hates the unemployed, and NC hates paying unemployment.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.
