I am in New York City. My effective unemployment claim date is January 17, 2009.

I have thus far received 26 weeks of u/e benefits, 20 weeks of tier one, and am about to finish up (I believe on March 10) the rest of Tier 2. Will I be eligible for Tier 3 or any other tier? Trying to do the math is MADDENING!

I copied this from my "view payment history" when I logged onto the site:

Start/Effective Date:01/12/2009
Benefit Year Ending Date:01/17/2010
Weekly Benefit Amount:$405.00
Maximum Amount Payable:$21,000.00
Remaining Balance:$810.75

If anyone else out there can help, thanks!

It is not your call-in date, but the date of the previous Saturday -- which is the end of the unemployment week -- that affects eligibility for Tiers.

If your next call in date is March 10, you will be calling in for two weeks ending Saturday, March 6. That means you exhaust Tier II after the current cut-off date of February 27, and you will be unable to start a new Tier on February 28 (the latest date to start a new Tier).

If the cut-off date is extended by Congress, you will be able to collect Tier III.

In the meantime, check the New York state DOL website for your eligibility for EB in the event you are unable to collect Tier III.

thanks. dont think I am eligible for extended benefits, and emergency benefits only if, as you say, the deadlines are extended. Hopefully Reid & Co. will see fit to extend the deadline so that I may collect the 13 weeks granted through tier 3.

If it helps, IMO it looks almost certain that Reid will get at least a 30-day extension in the cut-off dates at this time -- probably through the end of March 2010. And that would get you into Tier III.

In March I believe that there will be more negotiations with the Republicans to extend the cut-off dates again -- most likely for a much longer period.

surely all sides realize that, aside from karmic implications, hesitating to extend the deadline would be political suicide. Such a shame Reid has to stoop to sweetening the deal (tax breaks) to get the republicans to latch on. Thats not meant as an indictment of Reid, but moreso the other side.

Has there been any mention at all of a new tier? I know so many people out of work that it boggles the mind!

It looks like you missed the next tier by a week. If you had filed a week earlier you would have been eligible for an extra 13 weeks.

Bookmark the following 3 pages as they will be updated when/if Congress enacts the new extensions or pushes back tier deadlines, which is very likely to happen :

New York State Department of Labor - Breakdown of Additional Benefits
New York State Department of Labor - ExtendedBenefits
New York State Department of Labor - UI Benefits Calculator

Not a word on a new Tier -- or on any weeks to be added to existing Tiers. Those in Congress who championed the original EUC Tier system -- and the subsequent additions -- have been silent on this round.
