Am I the only one offended by the media constantly using the term "gave up looking"?
What less offensive term do you suggest for a decline in the number of unemployed actively seeking work? That's exactly one of the measurements gathered in the current population survey and reflected in the workforce size used to calculate the U3 rate...

Oh, I was overlooking that "gave up" implies discouragement - it should probably just be "stopped looking". For example if you decide to pursue more education or retire, "gave up" might not be an accurate characterization of your reasons. Sorry I didn't get that at first...
Isn't it amazing that 615k people "gave up" looking for employment, enough that the government can say that unemployment went down 0.2%? I bet a majority of those people, if they were offered a job today, would take it in a heartbeat! Just like the rest of us. I bet most of those 615 thousand people just see little-to-no hope of finding a job anytime soon.
But now the government can say look, the economy is improving, see unemployment is still heading down. Everything is under control!

Has anyone even whispered a word about the millions of 99ers out here?????? or are we the totally forgotten group????
When they can't even pass deadline extensions for the current tiers, what hope do you really think there is for anyone that's already received 99 weeks?

I agree completely. The difficulties in extending the existing EUC Tiers program are obvious. But in addition, the last time the Tiers program was expanded was in November 2009 -- when a 14th week was added to Tier II, and Tiers III and IV were created.
The fact that there has been no legislation introduced or even drafted since 2009 that would add additional weeks to the existing Tiers or create a Tier V does not bode well for more benefits for the 99ers at this time.
