There is a theory that spirits eventually work out their issues and cross over. There are stories of Jane Howard running down a hallway to beg Henry VIII’s forgiveness... and also that she’s not been seen as often as of late.

Or they're a kind of "recording" associated with trauma that can be picked up and experienced somehow, and eventually the "tape" wears out (maybe like radioactivity, hauntings have a half life - which seems to be a couple of hundred years since medieval hauntings are rare). I personally don't think they're the spirits of the dead.
Ghost are generally seen dressed in the clothes they wore
as human beings. If they lived 100 years ago, then they will
be seen in fashion from that time. If they died in the 1970's
and were trendy dressers, then you will see them in bell bottoms
and halter tops. It is an advantage to see them this way
because they can be better identified.
There is a story about a painter at an apartment in the Dakotas
apartment complex in New York City (where John Lennon was
assassinated and the movie Rosemary's Baby was filmed) who was
repainting a unit for new tenants. While he was working he would
see the former tenant, who had passed away, watching him paint.
He said the former tenant appeared to him as a child, a young man
and then an older man. Spirits can change how you see them?
Well, I have seen two ghosts, and neither of them were wearing vintage clothing.
I saw both in broad daylight very clearly.
The first was a lady in her fifties or sixties. She had wavy blonde hair that sat rather close to her head and she was slightly plump. She was wearing a modern tunic blouse and pants. The tunic was pale gray and had a silky shine to it. She looked like anyone I would see at the grocery store or in a restaurant, and not give a second look.
It was broad daylight and I was startled to see a stranger in my room! I did not know she was a ghost until she disappeared. She looked like a flesh and blood three-dimensional person.
The second was a man wearing a t-shirt and jeans. I also didn't know this one was a ghost. He walked on my deck past one window, and then didn't appear in the very next window just a few inches away. I thought it was my friend walking on the deck, and waited to see him going past the next window. When nothing happened, I got up and looked, and no one was there.
My friend then came out of another room. He wasn't out on the deck at all. There are no stairs from the ground to the deck, so no stranger can get up there either.
The witnesses claim they saw ghosts wearing Victorian clothing, or any period piece clothing. How come we don't hear from them claiming they saw ghosts wearing skinny jeans or emo haircuts, or even bell-bottoms, or Miami Vice clothing with New Wave haircuts?

most people don't believe until they experience one themselves that they cannot rationlize-----had that happen to a very skeptical friend who called me to come get her out of a home she rented after what was there made itself very well known without any doubt

I wasn't "expecting" to see ghosts wearing modern-day clothing.
In both cases, they were so three-dimensional and detailed, I had no idea they were ghosts, until they vanished.
The laws of physics do not support the existence of ghosts? Excuse me, but I can't catch my breath from laughing so hard at the arrogance of that sweeping statement.

Perhaps if they're in modern-day garb, we don't recognize them as ghosts as quickly.
I truly hate being unoriginal in my experiences, but the one sighting I had was a young woman who was indeed sporting Victorian-era fashions.
