Hi everyone. I am really considering moving to Scotland after I graduate from college in December. I was going to go there this summer and study abroad, but that fell through. I really want to live in another country for a little bit while I'm still young and just enjoy a new environment and get out of the US. What's the best way planning this out? I would either like to live in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Which place is cheaper to live? What are good areas to find less expensive apartments, which place has more jobs to offer, etc.. I will have a liberal arts degree when I graduate, and was wondering what kind of jobs are available there and what websites would be good to look into for job searching. Would love to know pros/cons of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and what would be a good place for a 23 year old single female would be. Thanks!
I have looked into ways to move over to the UK (England I love!) and there are a few ways to stay over there
--Study Abroad/Grad School (which Im doing this fall) then I can change my visa and work for 2 years
- get a workplace in Scotland to sponsor you...
- marriage
Im not far from Glasgow its a great place for young people and is full of tourists and students. Don't get me wrong Edinburgh is beautiful too but its alot more expensive, my cousin lives there and i would say this area is much cheaper and the universities are very good too
You'll never get bored in Glasgow, there is pleanty to do with trendy nightclubs dotted all over, nice bars/pubs and pleanty of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained. The city centre itself is also very safe and never empty. I've never had any problems in the city itself.
My fiance is from the U.S and managed to obtain a 2 year study visa, he attended college here now he is on his post study visa for another 2 years.
Chumpster, are you a US citizen ? Can you claim any UK/EU citizenship through a parent or grandparent ? If not your chances of getting a work permit are slim as Liberal Arts isn't specialised enough. However, you could try this Intern in Britain
thanks everyone!
Well I won't be going there as a student, I will have graduated by then and just looking to live there and work. I am a US citizen and pretty sure I can claim UK citizenship..how long does the process take? I should start now, right? I'm going to read the UK border agency. I can look for an internship as long as it pays.
Glasgow sounds more like my kind of city, plus I heard the music scene is really good there.
What kind of industries are Edinburgh/Glasgow known for? Are there specific sites I can look at (like monster.com) that can help me search for jobs?
What's a good way to make friends there? I'm sure it's not hard, heart Scottish people are super friendly!
thanks everyone!

Glasgow is known for business, IT, arts scene but not really sure what else but there are alot of businesses located there.
I don't know if you'd be able to gain citizenship though. Unless you have a shortage skill.
