Me assuming you were envious would be as bad as you assuming what McMansions represent, so no. I could wonder though.
It's barely an assumption that McMansions represent imitations of wealth (Hence the "Mc"). It is truly specious to guess that someone is envious, however.
You can have a house built as you please, you just have to pay.
The main problem with McMansions seems to be they allow people to express what their critics consider bad taste, there's an attitude that those who lack a particular sense of taste shouldn't be allowed to express themselves; "how dare they". Very subjective and really kind of snooty and quite reactionary. I wonder how much of this is envy by those who consider themselves refined but underpaid towards the unrefined who make more dough.
Good post, but don't overlook those who buy such houses to quell their own insecurity. A thread like this invokes criticism and praise inherently.

Its a huge assumption. And a ridiculous one. Does your car represent an imitation of wealth because it has a GPS in it and as many other previously high end features as the builder could manage while still having an attainable price tag? What a ridiculous notion. Is your gold plated watch or jewlery an imitation of wealth being its not solid gold? How about your silver colored microwave that isn't actually made of stainless steel. Is it too uppity for someone to buy the products they can afford with as many of the qualities they like as possible?

So why do you think they're called "Mc"Mansions (emphasis on "Mc")?

Because the ones with that belief invented the term for the purpose of expressing their belief.....why else.
Why were asians called gooks? Because some hicks thought their language sounded like gobblygook. 'But there language is gooblygook, why else would they be called gooks?' yeah, nice logic
So who bought a large house with all the features they wanted to quell their insecurity and what is your relation to this person?
I know a handful of people at work who bought them in the same suburban tracks. When invited over to one of their houses for dinner there were obvious remarks about who had the largest house or yard. The following day, one of the people who attended the same dinner remarked on the envy within the group...last time I go over there.
Then there are the same types of people who buy cars to impress. There's a lot of this in our country. Not everyone who owns a nice car or large house is like this, but it is at least somewhat representative of American materialism.

You can't honestly compare racist terms about actual people with material objects like a house. One is a thing/style with material qualities; another is in regard to superficial qualities that are backed by thoughts/feelings/etc. Apples to bowling balls.
Look at those garishly large homes they're building in our neighborhood! And people pay extra for them! (Or maybe: don't we have more taste?) And then vaguely NIMBYish statements on how the new homes don't fit in.
