Hi guys!

First post here and I wanted to post something about my situation and see if I can get any feedback. I am not sure if this is in the right forum but this is where I will be moving.

I am getting out of the Navy on 23FEB2013 due to a involuntary seperation (Honorable) for a medical disability ( broken leg w/ multiple surgeries back in AUG2011). My leg is fine now I just have issues running long distances. I have a wife and two boys with 2 small dogs ( Boston Terriers), One of my boys is disabled and is on SSI. I have been looking around for a house to rent in Vancouver WA, and this is my situation.

I will have no proof of income when I first move other then unemployment, VA disability ( currently being processed not sure on amount yet) and my son's SSI. I am a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and am qualified for several medical jobs on the civilian side. I am currently lining jobs up as we speak but will take a month or two for me and my wife to get situated once we move there. I have contacted a couple landlords telling them about my situation and have not had much luck, they all seem to say " sorry good luck but we cannot help you".

I have over 20,000 in my savings account, both of my cars are paid off and I have no debt. I have told the landlords that I am willing to pay up to 12 months in advance if that will help but am still being told no. I can also provide my DD214 (discharge paperwork), bank statements or anything else a landlord would require. Do you guys have any advice for me? Me and my wife are stressed out about the situation and since I am not in the area yet may be people think I am a scam or something? I am not sure but hopefully once I arrive in the area my luck may improve a bit.

Thanks for any feedback!

Nick

I would take you as a renter in a hearbeat, but... I don't have any rentals in town. I will inquire of my friends and fellow investors. I don't feel it should be a problem for you (recent discharge). Just haven't found the correct / manager place yet.

Personally, I wouldn't offer to pay a yr, and you might not like the place, or get in a bad spot later.

How much do you want to spend, and in what area of town? I will consider / let you know what I find, and am willing to guide you with suggestions. (I avoid east fourth plain and Bagley areas, and some of Orchards.)

Most of Vancouver is decent. I would get as close to Ft Vancouver as possible to enjoy large park with family. + be close to VA facility which should be your FIRST priority as employer.

VA medical has been GREAT to my family (for services and employment). You might end up having to work in Portland VA, but they run a daily shuttle from Vancouver. If so... I would work nights to reduce the commute time and increase the salary. I worked nights and homeschooled my kids during the day, we had a good time.

Vancouver is a decent spot I hope you find what you are needing. Another option in WA is Retsil / Port Orchard (WA Veterans Home). It is not VA, but is STATE run and probably retain your yrs + keep you eligible for transfer to VA With your Yrs of service credited.

Hopefully you can stay in health care and pursue more medical training thru VA, they pay for classes + per Diem. My Sis has been through 3 programs with them. and is now making 6 figures with great benefits. (and EZ to work PT when needed).

I was looking to keep rent under $1250 a month and we were looking all over the area of vancouver/battle ground/Camas. My parents live in Battle Ground and have been scoping a few houses out in the Vancouver/Battle Ground area for us.

I am going to look into the VA for employment here over the next couple days and see what job openings they have. I appreciate your time in talking with me and gladly except any advice or info that you offer me

Thanks!
