I'm deep into 7 digits in real estate and you couldn't move me into a gated community if you _gave_ me a house to replace my 7,000 square foot brick colonial williamsburg cape cod. Mine isn't parked in Williamsburg though. It's parked in rural Boones Mill, south of Roanoke, where kids aren't overscheduled to the point of exhaustion, and they can go outside and get their bare feet dirty and keep occupied on a summer day with the sort of stuff that you can't replicate behind the walls of a gated community without raising the Ire of the housing association president We know many of these families personally. Bless their hearts, but their kids are attending this camp, and that camp, and the other camp, and going on this trip, and that trip, and pretty soon the summer is over and now that their parents have scheduled away their entire summer, they're passed on to the school where their schedule is equally out of their control. I know I'm speaking in generalizations but my blanket statement is alot more accurate now than it was 20 years ago.

New2VA: I know full well what you mean about the modern older couple. A retired surgeon from Sebring, FL and his wife and their 13 year old adopted daughter are building a beautiful post and beam house on a ridged 10 acre parcel adjoining our farm. Their daughter rides most days at our horse farm and the mother and father visit with us regularly. The father is 75; the mother is 70. They had children late in life, who are grown and have children of their own, but when they found a young child in a very bad environment and had the opportunity to take that child in, they didn't think twice about it.

I am wondering if anyone has any updates on this topic. We were in GL and Fords Colony last week looking at property and thinking about a move. We prefer GL for the marina and other extras. We also prefer the larger more private lots with trees. We found a lovely home that we love but are concerned about the area with regards to children and schools. We have three young girls and while the elementary seems fine, James Blair Middle does not. It's been over a year since anyone has posted to this so we were just wondering if anyone had anything to add as an update on the area would be most helpful.

I'm also interested in knowing more about the different neighborhoods in Williamsburg.

Looking for small house, a bit of yard, safe neighborhood. Not interested in golf, tennis. More interested in gardening, libraries, historic sites, etc.

Friends/family in Yorktown so would be nice to be able to hop onto Colonial Parkway easily.

Try to be more specific in your request and we can post a response.
What size of home ? Square footage ? Bedrooms ? Size of yard ? How old of a home would you consider ? What price range ? Distance form Colonial Williamsburg you would consider ? Happy to post suggestions if you can narrow it down a bit.
