People I know claims these days the southern part of Virginia starts some were around Culpepper. Most of them have General lee images on their living room wall, since they are proud southerners and I assume knows what being southern entails.

Southern Culture?
I am always confused when I hear the word "southern culture". I compare the term to "redneck" when people from outside Virginia try to analyze.
It is a relative term depending on whose definition one is defending. Generally, the rural areas of southwest, southside and central VA or the "bible belt" would be considered "redneck". There are tons of American and confederate flags, Baptist churches on every corner, slower speech and
less education. These people tend to be die hard republicans and social conservatives. VA has some of the wealthiest and most educated in the nation and also some of the poorest. I also assume to use the term "southern culture" that is a bad thing, no? I am reminded of a previous post comparing the regions of Pennsylvania. The scary part of such an analysis between the northern part of the state and the rest is that much of the northern part of VA is made up of foreign born people! Does this fact portend that American born people are a dwindling resource and the rest of the world sees them without teeth and are generally worthless human beings? What a pompous insult!

I grew up in SW Virginia (not born there though), so I must say that many of the stereotypes do exist in this area (I think that one redneck photo someone posted on here is the sheriff, LOL)! Technically, Virginia itself is entirely Southern. In terms of "southern" culture, it's a bit different. Anyway, my opinion is anything west of Roanoke is hillbilly land. No offense, there are some very intelligent people living in SW Virginia, but I have seen so many people ranging from the border of Tennesee up to Blacksburg that love their NASCAR, moonshine, oxycotin/meth labs, country music and there were many students from Virginia Tech who were touring my little town in SW Virginia begging people to vote for Palin b/c she looked hot in her bikini and shotgun (they didn't know it wasn't real). I'm not a Democrat or Republican, but to me a shotgun and bikini is not a smart way to vote (she wasn't even running for president, it was McCain).
So, I say Roanoke is pretty much an estimate for the line. There are some areas around Roanoke that's a bit iffy, but that's where I would draw it. Just my opinion.

LOL! Not everyone fits, but seriously from living in this area for almost 2 decades, I see more people that fit the stereotype than those that break it. I knew of maybe 5 people where I live at who didn't actually BELIEVE that Obama was the "Anti-Christ". I kid you not, people were crying about the world coming to an end b/c they were afraid that he was going to be elected and grow horns. Also, if I hear one more person asking me why I'm 23 and not married with kids I'm going to threaten to kiss a women . Nice to see people breaking stereotypes though .
