Just a thought: how will the German government respond to this? Weighted for economy size this would be like a European government fining a major American corporation $160 billion. Will the German government just sit back and let it happen, regardless of the merits?
Maybe when European cars are "new"; they're better, I don't know. Tho when they get a few years on them, most brands start falling apart. Many people have told me to NEVER buy a used car from a German maker. Some Americans cars are Ok and, most Asians are now quite good.
My used Saab was a POS. Now I stick to US cars that any backyard mechanic can fix and find parts cheap.
I have heard of that in the news. I hope they get fined out of business. I mean, that is not just a minor unintended bug that many models are recalled for, it looks like hardcore fraud. How can VW be so stupid and think they won't get caught?!
I have heard that most German carmakers use certain tricks to make their cars look better than they actually are.
Maybe it has to do with VW's desperate goal of becoming the biggest carmaker in the world. They have also bought up a lot of other brands to that end.
If I had to buy a car I guess I would buy a Korean one.

But with the cat out of the bag it's going to be tough to get them out of fines and of course the recall costs and civil suits.
Their stock price is down 20% already (18billion of market cap) so the global investment community sure doesn't seem to think that they are going to escape the damage.
Have a friend who ran the parts department for both Honda and Volkswagen. Said he kept a lot busier at Volkswagen.
Anyone that works extensively with car repair information will confirm that. If you actually look at publically available rates from the countries that sell extended warranties on those.....volkswagon is typically much worse than the Asian and the US cars....but not as bad as BMW.
They have a lot of quality, make some great cars but reliability is another factor.

I've never once saw the appeal of owning a VW. Not only are they ugly, they do not give off the air of reliability. I can't think of a single time in my life where I said to myself "Hmmm...VW's are so reliable, I should go out and buy one." In fact, just the opposite. My instincts hold true. I can't find a single test showing VW has legendary quality. Toyota is the car to own if you want longevity.
Europeans can buy cars thst get much better gas mileage than those sold in the US due to our emissions scam.
